But no one in the NBA now — or perhaps in NBA history — is as dominating as Wilt Chamberlain was throughout his illustrious career.
Although “Wilt the Stilt” is known for scoring 100 points in a single game, the tale of his remarkable offensive skill cannot be recounted in a single night. The NBA’s second-highest points per game record was set by the towering center towards the end of his career (30.07). On that list, he’s the only player in front of him? Oh, simply a man called Michael Jordan, that’s all.
In his first six seasons in the NBA, Chamberlain topped the league in points per game. “The Big Dipper” averaged 50.4 points on 50.6 percent shooting during his memorable 1961-62 season. And no, it isn’t a mistake. 50.4! He scored 44.8 points the next season.
We haven’t even touched about his rebounding.
During his NBA career, Chamberlain grabbed 23,924 rebounds, the most in NBA history. In 14 seasons in the league, he averaged 22.9 rebounds per game.
Those are unheard-of statistics today, and we’ll never see them from another NBA player.
On the basketball floor, Wilt Chamberlain had just one opponent.
During his illustrious career, Chamberlain could score every time he touched the ball and get any rebound he desired, so it’s hard to imagine he was scared of anyone on the basketball court.
However, it is correct.

I’m walking down the alley, and Wes Unseld and Elvin [Hayes] are back there assisting. Unseld would harm you without blinking, I knew it. He’d sap the bravery of the rest of your squad, who wouldn’t even come out to your aid. They may not even come pick you up because he’ll strike them as well.
So he was the one player in the league that Wilt was afraid of, and I’d always heard that before I joined the league.

There are statistics that back it up.
Chamberlain was 32 years old and in his 10th season in the NBA when Unseld made it to the league in 1968. It’s strange to hear that a seasoned Chamberlain was only afraid to get to the rim against a 22-year-old rookie, but it speaks to Unseld’s physicality and ruthlessness as a defender.
Chamberlain averaged 19.0 points per game in 20 career games versus Unseld and the Baltimore Bullets. That’s some impressive defense against the greatest scorer of all time.
