A caddie is a person who carries a golfer’s bag and a few other items for him/her (like a glove) during a round of golf. The caddie also helps the golfer manage the scorecard, ball mark, and other such items. Caddies are usually hired by the club, not the golfer.
It was a near-perfect day for a professional golf tournament, right up until the last hole: Will Zalatoris needed a birdie to bring his first professional golf victory in the Canadian Open to a close. But after hitting a great second shot from the fairway, his caddie, Conrad Noordhoff, told him a visual clue to hit the next shot about 100 yards ahead.
Will Zalatoris, the University of Georgia golfer who led the United States to the 2016 Summer Olympics men’s golf team, is known for his cool, calm demeanor on the golf course. But that is not the way it was on the 18th hole at the 2013 U.S. Open.
Without their caddies, professional golfers would be nothing. Their ability to calculate precise distances, account for wind, and read greens is clearly beneficial, but the most important aspect of their job is to keep their employer in a positive frame of mind while on the course.
At all times, but particularly when victory is within grasp on a Sunday afternoon, golfers need a right-hand man (or lady, shoutout Lee Westwood) to calm them down and keep them focused. Will Zalatoris, a PGA Tour rookie, may not have had a professional victory if his caddy hadn’t pulled out a great “mind trick” on him down the stretch of the event.

This season, Zalatoris is on fire on the PGA Tour, but it was just a year ago that he was still battling for a promotion from the Korn Ferry Tour. Last season, the 24-year-old ripped through the KFT, finishing in the top 10 in 10 of his 16 races and winning for the first time as a pro.
Zalatoris won the TPC Colorado Championship at Heron Lakes in July with scores of 67, 67, 70, 69. After a shaky start to his final round with a bogey on the second hole, the teenage prodigy bounced back with four birdies and no bogeys the rest of the way to beat Chase Johnson by one shot.
Zalatoris’ caddy is to credit for his cool, calm, and collected demeanor down the stretch of the event.
Zalatoris credits his first victory to his caddie’s clever “mind trick.”

As he navigated through the back nine of his maiden professional victory, Zalatoris seemed to be in full control of his emotions. He started with a 2-under 34 and finished with several clutch putts to keep the pack at bay.
But, as he neared the finish line that day, the Wake Forest graduate was only in the proper frame of mind thanks to a remarkable “mind trick” performed on him down the stretch by his veteran caddy, Ryan Goble.
This week, Zalatoris recounted the tale from Sedgefield Country Club, where the Wyndham Championship is being held.
“When I won in Colorado, I won on 15, which is a very approachable par 5. Zalatoris stated, “I hit it over the back of the green and had maybe a 35-footer, and I left it hanging on the lip.” “Ryan could sense my dissatisfaction. We go up to the 16th tee, and it’s a 122-yard par-3 with a false front down the hill, and I’m pacing off the yardage. ‘I’ve got 122,’ I say. ‘Pace it off again,’ he replied. ‘You’ve got to be kidding me,’ I think to myself. I’m competing in a golf competition. ‘Do you have a different phone number?’ I walk it off again, and this time I get 122. When I looked at him, he was smiling, and I realized right away that he was trying to encourage me to calm down and take a breath. Don’t push yourself to make a mistake when you don’t have to, because the first thing you’ll think is, “Well, no, I’m not going to calm down.” You regain your composure.
“So it was a very nice little mind trick he performed on me, and I ended up hitting the ball to 8 feet, scoring birdie, and we won the event by a single stroke.”
Goble did a fantastic job at the most stressful time of his partner’s life. It’s fair to assume he’ll be keeping that position for a long.
At the Wyndham Championship, the rookie is in an unique must-win position.
Will Zalatoris, who now ranks 26th in the season-long points race with 1,270 points, will not qualify for the playoffs unless he wins Wyndham.

Despite playing in 24 PGA Tour tournaments this season, Zalatoris is still not a member of golf’s top circuit. He was supposed to get his Tour card before the year began, but due to COVID-19, no newbies were granted any.
Zalatoris, on the other hand, hasn’t been able to collect FedEx Cup points this season. And without FedEx Cup points, there will be no playoffs. He can only make the playoffs if he wins this weekend’s Wyndham Championship, which is the last event of the regular season.
Hopefully, Goble has a new trick under his sleeve to help the rookie win again.
