On the night of September 3, 1892, Washington University became a reality. The school began its football team with one simple mission: to win every game they play. That was until 1934 when the university decided it needed to change their name because people were confusing them for being connected with professional sports teams like Boston’s Red Sox and Chicago White Sox.

If you haven’t been paying attention to the National Football League in recent years, you may not be aware that the Washington Redskins club undergone two name changes in a 19-month period. The Redskins moniker was dropped in 2020, and the team was renamed simply Football Team. The franchise officially changed its name to the Commanders in February after a protracted process of attempting to build a new identity.

So, why did Washington go by two different names, and how did it get up on Commanders?

For the most of their existence, Washington supporters have only known the Redskins. In 1937, the team relocated from Boston to Washington and has been known as the Redskins ever since.

That is, until 2020, when the club began to get public criticism for its derogatory moniker and emblem. The flood of criticism began with Native American organizations, but when big sponsors like as Nike and FedEx began lobbying Washington to change its name, the company’s owners ultimately decided to act.

The squad stated in July 2020 that it will change its name to the Football Team. The new name would act as a stopgap until the company’s owners could come up with a long-term name and updated identity that was not objectionable in any manner.

Washington was known as the Football Team for two seasons until settling on the moniker Commanders earlier this year.

After years of deliberation, the Washington Redskins’ moniker hunt was narrowed down to seven candidates in January: Armada, Brigade, Red Hogs, Presidents, Commanders, RedWolves, and Defenders. The Commander’s name was officially announced a month later.

In a statement, co-owner Dan Snyder stated, “As an organization, we are delighted to gather and rise together as one under our new identity while paying honor to our local heritage and what it means to represent the nation’s capital.” “As we begin our 90th season, it is critical that our organization and fans honor our previous traditions, history, heritage, and the greats who came before us.” While forging a route to a new age in Washington, we continue to revere and represent the Burgundy and Gold. Today may be the Washington Commanders’ first day, but we are and always will be Washington.”

As part of the Commanders announcement, Washington also presented new uniforms. In Washington, D.C., a new age has begun.
