Atlanta Hawks’ shooting guard Trae Young was drafted first overall in the 2018 NBA draft. Since then, Young has been dominating the NBA’s rookie circuit. Young is averaging 19 points, 6.5 assists, and 4.9 rebounds per game. He has also shot a remarkable 45.5% from behind the 3-point line. However, he’s only played in 26 games, due to injuries.
The Atlanta Hawks are coming off a season in which they barely missed the playoffs. With two young players earning a lot of time at the center position, Dennis Schroder and John Collins, the future looks bright for the Atlanta Hawks. Dennis Schroder is a solid point guard who can run the offense and distribute the ball. He is also very capable of getting to the rim. However, the Hawks may trade him for a few more assets to help his value and get him out of their price range.
Trae Young is an unrestricted free agent in the offseason, and with several teams interested in signing him, it’s hard to predict how long he’ll stay put in Atlanta. That being said, Atlanta has already expressed interest in re-signing Young, and they are likely trying to improve his value for potential trade talks.
Atlanta Hawks guard Tra Young is without a doubt one of the best young players in the NBA. Just ask the New York Knicks. The 22-year-old budding superstar just led the Hawks to their first winning season in four years (as much as Atlanta last made the playoffs), their first playoff run in five years and their first division title in six years, proving he’s not just a scorer. He has made Atlanta a real contender to win the Eastern Conference, and if the team continues to add players, they will be a real threat to win the NBA title in the coming years (yes, I said it). But only if the franchise is truly committed to its young star. With his contract expiring, the Hawks must be willing to spend a lot of money to prevent Young from moving to a top franchise. And we say sooner rather than later.Trae Young became a superstar in his first three seasons with the Hawks
. Young was selected by the Dallas Mavericks with the fifth overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft and quickly traded to the Hawks in exchange for the rights to Luka Doncic. Young had a fantastic first season, averaging 19.1 points and 8.1 assists. He was named the NBA’s best rookie and finished second to Doncic in the rookie of the year election. In the 2019-20 season, Young became the fourth top scorer in the NBA, averaging 29.6 points per game, and was invited to his first NBA All-Star Game, where he scored 10 points as a starter for Giannis. He was easily one of the most notable non-players in the 2021 All-Star Game, but Young had a fantastic 2020-21 season with Atlanta. Because the Hawks’ roster was much more balanced last year than in the previous two years, Young didn’t have to take as many shots and score as he did last season, but he still averaged 25.3 points per game, along with 9.4 assists and 3.9 rebounds. He also reduced interceptions and improved his defense, making him an even bigger threat going forward.
Ice Trey had a phenomenal post-season
. After leading the Hawks to a 41-31 record and the Southwest Division title, Young made an incredible start to the postseason by scoring 32 points in Game 1 of the series against the Knicks, including the decisive basket less than a second after Atlanta’s 107-105 victory that silenced the hostile Madison Square Garden crowd. The Knicks won in Game 2, but Young and the Hawks dominated the rest of the series, winning five games by an average of 29.2 points and 9.8 assists. Ice Trey then scored 35 points and handed out 10 assists in Game 1 of the second round of the series, in which the Philadelphia 76ers won 128-124 over the Atlanta 76ers. No matter what, Young has proven that he is now among the NBA’s elite and on the verge of a big payday.
When can Young leave the Hawks?

Atlanta had a club option for years 3 and 4, both of which were waived, meaning Young will be a free agent in the summer of 2022. For those who are not familiar with this concept : The free agency restriction means Young can sign the offer, but Atlanta will have the ability to negotiate it. But it’s unlikely the Hawks will let it get that far. After this season, Young is eligible for a five-year, $168 million contract extension, which would keep him in Atlanta until the 2026-27 season, when he will be just 28 years old. That Young will sign a contract extension this summer is all but certain, as the owners have proven they are willing to put pieces around him to make the team competitive. It remains to be seen if Young will remain with the Hawks for the rest of his career. But it’s likely he’ll stay there for at least the next six years, and if the owners can continue to build the team around him, the title drought that has lasted more than six decades could finally end. With his combination of defense, shooting, and playmaking ability, it’s clear that he is a good player, and he is being given more opportunities to impress this season. Should the Hawks be interested in moving him this summer, then they will likely have to pay a hefty price when it comes to the value of the player..
