As the Cleveland Cavaliers fall to a 3-9 record, Tyronn Lue has been put on notice. This season is not going according to plan and three of his five starters are out with injuries while LeBron James has barely played. However, despite all this adversity he’s still somehow managed to keep them in playoff contention through it all.

Tyronn Lue is the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers. He has been in a very tough situation this year, but he has led them to an NBA Championship. Read more in detail here: tyronn lue.

Tyronn Lue Won't Win NBA Coach of the Year but No One Has Done More With Less

The NBA Coach of the Year award is a difficult one to win. Monty Williams of the Phoenix Suns, who should have won last year (but apparently 41 victories in New York is better than 51 elsewhere), is back in the mix. The Miami Heat’s Erik Spoelstra should already have one or two trophies; maybe this is his year. The Memphis Grizzlies’ Taylor Jenkins and the Cleveland Cavaliers’ J.B. Bickerstaff accomplished outstanding job. Tyronn Lue of the Los Angeles Clippers, the greatest overachiever of the group, is unlikely to receive a look.

That’s a pity, since Lue’s work in Los Angeles has been tremendous. Yes, the Clippers were finalists in the Western Conference a year ago. However, this is a squad predicated on the star power of Paul George and Kawhi Leonard, who have produced hardly anything. The Clippers, on the other hand, did not crash into the lottery. Not yet, at least.

Early in the season, the Los Angeles Clippers lost two of its best players.

From the outset, Leonard’s comeback this season was a risky venture. He tore his ACL in half during the playoffs. Last season, Pandemic 2: Electric Sneeze-At-You caused the playoffs to be postponed. The Claw’s last game was on June 14, and he isn’t expected to play again this season.

George hasn’t played since Dec. 22 due to an injury to his right elbow. Coach Tyronn Lue received 26 games and 924 minutes from his superstars for a total salary of $39.3 million.

To put it another way, Reggie Jackson is LA’s highest scorer among players eligible for the league lead. Excellent player, a seasoned veteran who consistently performs well. And he should never, ever be the first choice for a playoff club. Marcus Morris, 32, is their No. 2 choice.

Anyone who predicted Jackson and Morris would be LA’s go-to men last fall definitely wouldn’t have predicted the club would be in the postseason chase.

But there are the Clippers, who are 34–32 and firmly in eighth place in the Western Conference, three games behind Minnesota for seventh place and homefield advantage in the 7-8 play-in game. With a five-game lead over the Lakers, they shouldn’t tumble out of the top eight.

Lue is responsible for much of the Clippers’ success. Two-time Coach of the Year Tom Thibodeau outlined some of the reasons behind this.

Tyronn It’s all about the outcome for Lue.

“I’ll try anything because I don’t give a damn. I don’t care what other people think, what you write, or what you say. I just do what I feel will succeed and is correct.”

Thibodeau was an assistant coach when Tyronn Lue played for the Houston Rockets, and they were together on Doc Rivers’ staff with the Boston Celtics. Thibodeau’s Knicks ended the Los Angeles Clippers’ five-game winning streak with an emphatic 116–93 win on March 6. But Thibs had nothing but good things to say about his counterpart, per Clippers beat writer Tomer Azarly via Twitter.

Thibodeau stated, “Ty has always been loyal to himself.” “He isn’t scared to take risks. He was a little bit of a gambler as a player, so we had to keep an eye on him. He’s a risk-taker, and it’s paid off for him. That’s how he’s wired.”

Lue didn’t dispute that assertion, per Azarly’s Twitter account:

“I try everything because I don’t care,” he says. I don’t give a damn what other people think; I don’t care what you write or say. I just do what I feel will succeed and is correct.”

Luke Kennard is prospering in Lue’s sixth-man position. The five-year veteran leads the NBA in three-point shooting (45.0%) and averages 11.6 points a night in 27.5 minutes. Ivica Zubac averages ten points and eight and a half boards per game.

This season, Lue has employed 23 different starting lineups; the Clippers have eight players who have played at least 1,000 minutes but none who have played more than 2,000. They exemplify the term “plug-and-play” squad. Nicolas Batum, who was supposed to be nearing the end of his career, is a crucial contributor.

The 44-year-old is in his fourth full season as a head coach (with the Cleveland Cavaliers for portions of two more) and has previously been in three NBA Finals. After taking over for David Blatt at the midway mark of the 2016 season, he guided the Cavs to the championship.

Tyronn Lue’s next Coach of the Year vote will be the first.

The Los Angeles Clippers are solidly in the playoff race despite getting little from Paul George and nothing from Kawhi Leonard. That's a credit to coach Tyronn Lue.

Tyronn Lue has a career record of 209–140 in six seasons as an NBA head coach. That’s a winning percentage of.599 percent.

Despite two 50-win seasons and a third on the horizon in the abbreviated 2020–21 season, he has never received a single vote in the Coach of the Year voting.

That is unlikely to change this season, with the Los Angeles Clippers sitting around.500. Voters are looking for big victory totals. Sam Mitchell of the Toronto Raptors was the last COY winner with fewer than 50 victories until Thibodeau last season.

Coach of the Year, on the other hand, indicates that your club finished in the top two or three in the standings. To be fair to Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr, his championship in 2015-16 lasted less than half a season. While Kerr recovered from back surgery, assistant Luke Walton got the Dubs off to a 39–4 start.

Golden State did, in fact, establish a record with 73 regular-season victories. Kerr, on the other hand, only coached 39 of those games. Kerr had a difficult time exceeding expectations since they were the reigning champs.

As the voters demonstrated with Thibodeau, a coach may be rewarded for winning more games than predicted without challenging for a championship. Tyronn Lue, in a perfect world, would be given the same consideration this season. But he’s unlikely to do so.
