Chiefs fans have been on pins and needles since the first day of offseason workouts, when Patrick Mahomes was injured. With Mahomes’ injury, it was a concern that the Kansas City offense wouldn’t be nearly as potent or effective as in recent years. However, the Chiefs’ offseason moves have erased that concern.

There are many things that can make a football fan nervous. The NFL draft is one of them, and for one Kansas City Chiefs fan, that anxiety was magnified when quarterback Patrick Mahomes was injured in the first quarter of Sunday’s season opener. Mahomes, who has been described as one of the most exciting players in the NFL, took a hard shot while running in the first quarter of the season opener. Mahomes, who is recovering from a broken hand, is expected to miss a few weeks.

Patrick Mahomes doesn’t have to be 100% healthy to be a factor on the field. Because even if the 2018 NFL MVP was out of shape on a Sunday afternoon, he would dominate most defenders. But the Kansas City Chiefs would certainly like him fully healthy before training camp begins. Fortunately for Chiefs fans, the latest update on Mahomes’ injury should allay any lingering concerns. But does that mean Kansas City is coming into its third consecutive Super Bowl? Or will another team knock the two-time defending AFC champions off their throne?

Patrick Mahomes had surgery shortly after Super Bowl 55

Cox/Getty Images Let’s just say Mahomes had a rough night at the office during Super Bowl 55. Playing behind an injury-plagued offensive line, the talented kicker didn’t get the protection he needed to move the chain. He was already suffering from a nagging toe injury and sustained further damage playing against a Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense led by Jason Pierre-Paul, Shaquille Barrett and Ndamukong Suh. Three days after the Chiefs’ loss against the Bucs under Brady, Mahomes underwent surgery to repair a torn footplate in his foot. Although it was initially announced that he would miss the entire offseason program, his recovery was quicker than expected. In fact, the superstar quarterback participated in the voluntary activities and mandatory mini-camp of the organized team without any major restrictions. We were careful with him, and he can do anything, so we were just trying to be as smart as possible, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said at Thursday’s press conference. And his communication was excellent. He was open to us and we watched him to make sure and see how he did in training.

Mahomes injury update should address lingering concerns of Chiefs fans

. OTAs and mini-camps are not comparable in intensity to training camp or pre-season games, but they are still important parts of the team-building process. While Mahomes hasn’t spent as much time scrambling and running as he normally does in a real game, the fact that he’s already on the field a few months after his surgery is a big step in the right direction. But will his tricky toe hold? Although Mahomes could not predict the future, he was certain of what lay ahead. I don’t see a problem for the future, Mahomes said at Thursday’s press conference. Of course I have to keep re-educating myself, working on these things – strengthening them, doing all these different things. But I feel like I’ve had some good OTAs, some good mini-camps. I could move around, climb and do what I needed to do. Chiefs fans can breathe a sigh of relief and look forward to an even healthier version of Mahomes this summer. If he doesn’t suffer a setback in the coming months, the 25-year-old should enter the 2021 season as the favorite for MVP. And thanks to the great work of general manager Brett Veach, the Chiefs seem like a big threat to win the Super Bowl again.

Which teams should be on Kansas City’s radar in the AFC?

. Kansas City has greatly improved Mahomes’ defense this season by signing Joe Tooney and contracting Orlando Brown Jr. With an improved offensive line in front of him, a dynamic quarterback should have plenty of time to scour the field for Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce or another open player. Meanwhile, the Chiefs have several stars on defense (Chris Jones, Frank Clark and Tyrann Mathieu) who can carry the team. On paper, the defending champions look strong in all respects. So who can challenge Mahomes and Co. for the AFC Championship? The Tennessee Titans should be considered a serious contender for the Super Bowl now that they have Julio Jones on the roster. An offense around Jones, Derrick Henry, A.J. Brown and Ryan Tannehill should pose problems for the defense, so expect the Titans to be one of the best teams in the AFC this season. Depending on what happens with the quarterback, the New England Patriots could also knock the Chiefs off their throne. Bill Belichick spent an unprecedented amount of money in free agency to fill critical holes on the team roster. With a championship-caliber defense and a revamped offense, the Patriots could make a big impact if they’re willing to let Mack Jones play right away. The Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills are also potential problems for the Chiefs. Both teams play at a high physical level, and Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen have unique skills that make them difficult to defend. But as long as the Chiefs have Patrick Mahomes at the helm of their offense, it’s hard to imagine an AFC team knocking Kansas City out of the playoffs.
