Everything in the NFL is built on the foundation of draft picks and free agency. The Indianapolis Colts are in a catch-22 regarding the latter: they’re not going to be able to compete in free agency, because the cost is too high, particularly to a team like the Colts. On the other hand, they don’t want to trade the picks they do have, because it would set them back in the future and they’re still an up-and-coming team who needs to build from within.
The Indianapolis Colts need a quarterback. Whether they need a franchise quarterback remains to be seen, but certainly they need a good one. The Colts have been searching for QB since Peyton Manning retired. They have draft picks at the top of the 2018 and 2019 drafts. If the Colts don’t have a franchise QB, they will likely lose the AFC South next year.
Recently, the Eagles traded up to draft quarterback Carson Wentz, in what has been a successful draft for the Eagles. While the move was made with the intention of developing Wentz’s skills, Philadelphia has proceeded to beat the expectations of many by leading the league in wins. Carson Wentz has hardly gotten a chance to practice with the Indianapolis Colts before suffering yet another injury setback. Given Wentz’s history of durability problems with the Philadelphia Eagles, the fact that he was injured long before the Colts’ first preseason game doesn’t bode well for his prospects of reviving his career under Frank Reich.
The Colts can’t afford to take any more risks with the most crucial position in sports with their new starting quarterback injured. Even if Wentz’s rehabilitation timetable enables him to return to the field in time for the 2021 season, they shouldn’t be satisfied with their present depth chart.
General manager Chris Ballard has to contact Urban Meyer right now if he wants to strengthen the quarterback room with a genuine signal-caller.
The Colts can easily overcome Wentz’s season-ending injury if the Jacksonville Jaguars are ready to work with one of their division opponents.
Indianapolis’ decision to bet on Carson Wentz seems to be a risky one.
The Indianapolis Colts are no strangers to losing a starting quarterback to a catastrophic injury. Obviously, Peyton Manning’s career was cut short due to a neck problem that necessitated spinal fusion surgery. Andrew Luck unexpectedly departed from the league at the age of 29 just before the 2019 season started. Given all of the injuries he suffered after joining the team as the No. 1 overall selection in the 2012 NFL Draft, it shouldn’t have come as a complete surprise when he retired from the game.
Unfortunately for the Colts, their most recent attempt to find a successor to Luck appears to be in jeopardy due to an injury.
When Philip Rivers announced his retirement in January, Indianapolis decided to take a chance on Wentz, who had previously seemed to be a rising star for the Eagles. Of course, the No. 2 overall selection in the 2016 NFL Draft fell out of favor in Philadelphia due to a mix of durability problems and bad performance.
Despite this, the Colts traded a 2021 third-round pick and a 2022 conditional second-round pick to the Eagles for the 28-year-old quarterback. Wentz returned to training camp with plenty of incentive to prove his detractors wrong after reuniting with his old offensive coordinator.
Then catastrophe hit.
On Thursday, July 29, Wentz sustained a foot injury during practice. According to ESPN, the former Pro Bowler will be sidelined for five to twelve weeks while he recovers from surgery to remove a bone from his left foot’s fifth metatarsal.
Losing your new starting quarterback right at the start of training camp is a huge blow for a club with genuine Super Bowl ambitions. However, the Colts just need to call up another fresh face that joined the AFC South this offseason if they want to overcome Wentz’s season-ending injury.

While the Colts’ backups include 2020 fourth-round selection Jacob Eason, rookie sixth-round pick Sam Ehlinger, and newly-signed Brett Hundley, the Jaguars have a generational prospect in Trevor Lawrence and a backup who has shown Pro Bowl potential while playing for a bad club. Gardner Minshew should be brought to Indianapolis if the Colts want to make a significant improvement at the position.
In 23 games since being drafted in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the 6-foot-1, 225-pound quarterback has completed 62.9 percent of his throws for 5,530 yards, 37 touchdowns, and just 11 interceptions. Minshew, on the other hand, is unlikely to return to the field now that Lawrence has taken over as the franchise’s face. Minshew seems to be a fantastic choice for the Colts, given his interesting skill set, excellent track record of performance, and more-than-affordable contract (Minshew will earn less than $2 million over the remaining two years of his rookie deal).
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported in June that the Jaguars were seeking a fifth- or sixth-round selection in exchange for the 25-year-old former Washington State star. Even if Jacksonville raises the price to a fourth-round pick merely because Indianapolis is in the same division, Ballard should still go ahead and make the trade.
In fact, if you take a step back and look at Wentz and Minshew from a distance, there’s no reason Meyer shouldn’t hear from the Colts soon.

Is it possible that Minshew, rather than Wentz, might be a better fit for the Colts’ offense? While the former lacks the proper physique for a genuine franchise quarterback, he has recently performed at a far better level. Plus, despite overcoming tremendous obstacles, Minshew has attained a fair degree of accomplishment.
First, he came into the league as a relatively unnoticed sixth-round selection, much like Tom Brady. Minshew started 14 games and earned a devoted fanbase after showing big-play ability and remarkable moxie for a rookie.
In addition, the brilliant gunslinger, like so many other young players, did not have the luxury of a regular offseason in 2020. Despite playing for a poor Jaguars club, Minshew still put up respectable statistics, including a 66.1 percent completion percentage and an outstanding 16:5 touchdown-to-interception ratio.
Consider him in a situation with a proven head coach (Reich), a savvy general manager (Ballard), and a squad that seems capable of winning a division championship. Rather of dealing with a rebuild in Jacksonville, Minshew would inherit a club with a strong offensive line and an intriguing group of young talent players, including running backs Jonathan Taylor and Nyheim Hines, as well as receivers Michael Pittman Jr. and Parris Campbell.
It’s difficult not to be enthusiastic about Gardner Minshew taking over Reich’s offense. Even though the Colts sold two high draft choices for Carson Wentz in March, they shouldn’t rule out spending another asset in a quarterback capable of leading them to the playoffs.
