Josh Allen’s rise to one of the game’s top players has coincided with the Buffalo Bills’ emergence as a serious Super Bowl contender. The Bills seem to be in a good position to take the next step toward their high aim.
The majority of those efforts, though, will need the front management to continue to develop the roster around the great quarterback. Buffalo has already taken a step in that regard by signing free agent Rodger Saffold, a former Tennessee Titans Pro Bowl guard.

The Bills have emerged as one of the league’s elite teams during the previous two seasons.
Buffalo came within 13 seconds of reaching their second consecutive AFC championship game, highlighting their bright future. Josh Allen is at the vanguard of that effort, having established himself as one of the top quarterbacks in the game.
The 26-year-old is coming off another strong season in which he threw for 4,407 yards and 36 touchdowns while posting a 92.2 passer rating. The Bills’ front management has immediately given Allen cause to be thrilled with their first free agency decision as they attempt to maximize Allen’s skills.

The Bills’ front office immediately filled the vacancy left by the dismissal of starter right guard Daryl Williams.
The franchise didn’t look far to find his replacement by inking former Titans guard Rodger Saffold to a one-year deal. The 33-year-old spent the last three seasons with the Titans, developing into a highly dependable starter.
After making 15 starts as left guard in 2021, he was selected to his first Pro Bowl. Saffold has also played left tackle and right guard in the past.
He’s shown to be a tough competitor, appearing in 92 of the past 97 games during the last six seasons. He will offer a significant boost in the running game, in addition to protecting Josh Allen’s blindside.
Buffalo is coming off a season in which they were sixth in the league in running with 129.9 yards per game and 4.8 yards per attempt. They had a two-pronged rushing assault, with Devin Singletary (870 yards) and Allen leading the way (763). In 2022, the Bills will rely on Saffolds’ 6-foot-5, 325-pound size to create greater running lanes.
The main emphasis, though, is on keeping Allen healthy as he continues to grow into one of the league’s best quarterbacks. The 26-year-old has turned Buffalo into a viable Super Bowl contender by becoming the team’s driving force.
Keep in mind that Allen’s enormous six-year, $258 million deal, which he signed last offseason, won’t kick in until the 2023 season. All of this adds to the Bills’ need to strengthen their offensive line in order to keep their star quarterback healthy.

Saffold fills one need, but the Bills still have other issues to deal with with their top quarterback.
Because Cole Beasley is looking for a trade and Emmanuel Sanders is a free agent, the wide receiver room will most likely look a little different. Sanders has hinted at retirement, but clubs in need of a proven veteran wide receiver, such as the Green Bay Packers, Kansas City Chiefs, or Tampa Bay Buccaneers, may be interested.
However, with such likely losses, Gabriel Davis might establish himself as the backup receiver to Pro Bowler Stefon Diggs. According to Spotrac, the Bills are a little money-strapped, with around $5.7 million under the threshold. With such limitations in place, the front office may be able to shift contract bonuses around to gain greater financial flexibility.
Diggs is eligible for a contract extension in the fourth year of his five-year, $72 million agreement. Buffalo may be able to add to their squad with extra cap space as a result of this. Nonetheless, expect the Bills to stay active in order to maximize their Super Bowl chances.
