When the Cincinnati Bengals teamed Joe Burrow with Clemson receiver Tee Higgins is a character in the film Tee Higgins at the 2020 NFL Draft, they showed they were serious about the Joe Burrow era.

So far, everything have gone well for the explosive wideout. Higgins, who is just a game into his second season, spoke about his plans for 2022 and beyond.

Tee Higgins intends to change numbers before the 2022 season.

Those who weren’t paying attention to the NFL before Week 1 may have been shocked to see more non-quarterbacks wearing single digits, including Los Angeles Rams standout cornerback Jalen Ramsey.

Many players, from rookies to experienced Pro Bowlers, took advantage of the NFL’s new number rules ahead of the 2021 season. Higgins, the Bengals’ dynamic sophomore wide receiver, wants to be a part of that group next season.

According to ESPN, Higgins has said that he would retire his No. 85 jersey, which he has worn since joining the league, after this season. As much as he loves wearing the number, he is tired of being compared to Bengals great Chad Johnson, who also wore the number.

“I keep seeing ‘Ochocinco 2.0’ on Twitter. I’m not interested in becoming a 2.0. No offense to Chad. He’s a fantastic receiver, among other things. For me, I simply don’t want to be a 2.0. Tee Higgins, 1.0, No. 5 is who I want to be.”

Higgins also thinks Johnson’s number should be retired by the Bengals. From 2001 through 2010, the Bengals’ quirky wideout amassed 751 receptions, 10,783 yards, and 66 touchdowns in ten seasons with the team.

Higgins said, “I simply feel like Chad has done so much for this group.” “I simply have a hunch his number is going to be raised one day.”

At Clemson, Higgins dominated defenses while wearing No. 5.

Higgins won’t have to make a financial commitment and buy out the remainder of his jerseys by declaring he’ll change his number a year from now. Bengals supporters who have already spent hundreds of dollars on his current jersey — or, even worse, last year’s jersey with an out-of-date style — may feel better about the gaping hole in their wallets if the young receiver continues to shine while wearing his old number.

In three seasons at Clemson, Higgins has 135 receptions for 2,448 yards and 27 touchdowns. He also scored a 36-yard running touchdown as a junior in 2019, the same year he was named to the All-ACC first team.

With Higgins receiving touchdowns from then-freshman quarterback Trevor Lawrence, Clemson won the 2018 National Championship. Meanwhile, generations of Bengals supporters have grown up without ever seeing their club win a playoff game.

Burrow and Higgins are still working together on large projects.

Higgins exceeded expectations as a rookie, catching 67 passes for 908 yards and six touchdowns in 16 games, including 14 starts. Early in the 2021 NFL Draft, the Bengals teamed him with Ja’Marr Chase, Burrow’s former No. 1 wideout at LSU, with the hopes of creating a fresh version of Johnson/Ochocinco and T.J. Houshmandzadeh.

In Week 1, Bengals supporters received exactly what they paid for, particularly if they arrived to Paul Brown Stadium wearing an expensive genuine jersey with either player’s name on the back. In a 27-24 overtime win against the Minnesota Vikings, Higgins had four catches for 58 yards and a score. Chase has five receptions for 101 yards and a 50-yard score after struggling with drops throughout the preseason.

Higgins will continue to wear No. 85 when the Bengals travel to Chicago to play the Bears in Week 2. With a victory and a 2-0 start, the Bengals would be in great position heading into their Week 3 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In the passing game, expect Burrow to continue to depend on Chase and Higgins, who looked sharp in his comeback from a ruptured ACL. If the second-year wideout maintains his high level of play, he may decide to keep his present number after all.
