It’s the kind of story every NFL fan loves to hear about. You think you know everything about the greats, but after a few months, a new piece of information about them comes to light and it’s like you’re now seeing their life for the first time.
The San Francisco 49ers had one of the most successful quarterback changes in NFL history when they went from Joe Montana to Steve Young. Young, a longtime replacement for Montana, became the 49ers’ leading quarterback in 1992. The 49ers have remained one of the best teams in the NFC during his time under center. Although Young played well enough in the following years to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, he was haunted by his personal life during that time.Steve Young was consumed by loneliness

Steve even went to BYU before starting an NFL career. People of the Mormon faith often marry early, and Young remained single for most of his career. Although he was engaged twice, he did not marry either woman. In an interview with Sports Illustrated in 1997, Young called this aspect of his professional life a burden. But at that point, and as he neared the end of his career, he tried a different approach to not being married: I was always worried about that. Not anymore. I’ve had so many relationships. I’m practically a relationship guru. The easiest thing would be to get married in college, but I think you have to meet the right person. Celebrity and the Mormon faith didn’t mix well, of course, and it wasn’t easy. But I think it will happen. I think it is. Steve Young At the time, Young was still hoping to marry a Mormon woman before his career ended. He played his last NFL game in the fall of 1999.
Young lived with the weight and became an NFL legend
Football fans who watched Young every Sunday would probably never have guessed what his personal life was like. Young was selected first overall in the 1984 NFL Supplemental Draft and spent the season in the USFL. He transferred to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers a year later and remained in Florida until the end of the 1986 season. From 1987 to 1990, Young was Joe Montana’s replacement with the 49ers. He started 10 games in 1991, threw 17 touchdowns against eight interceptions, and became a regular starter a year later. From 1992-98, Young played 77-24 games as a starter and completed 66.9 percent of his passes for 24,266 yards, 178 touchdowns and 68 scores for the 49ers. Frequently Asked Questions
Did Steve Young ever win a Superbowl?
In the mid-1990s, Steve Young was suddenly a huge story, after he signed a $56 million contract with the San Francisco 49ers. His star was on the rise, but even the hottest of stars sometimes fade out. In 1996, when he was still just 27, he led a team to the Super Bowl. Years later, he still talks fondly of that magical time. It’s hard to imagine the Super Bowl without the shadow of the quarterback. Sure, there are the players that have impacted the game and the game itself, but none have been more important than those that have touched the quarterback position. Steve Young is one such quarterback: more than a player, he is an icon. He threw for yards and touchdowns, but his impact on the game transcended the stat sheet. With such a high level of performance, and so much more, how could Young keep it all together?
How many Super Bowls did Steve Young start?
At the end of his NFL career, Steve Young was named the NFL’s most valuable player. As the third quarterback to reach that milestone, he was the first to have two Super Bowl MVP awards. But he also holds another distinction: he’s the only NFL player to have started a Super Bowl for one team and another for another. He’s played 14 Super Bowls, and won a losing team’s only Super Bowl — the 49ers’ first in 1985. We’ve seen it before. An NFL quarterback comes into a struggling franchise, leads the team to an unexpected Super Bowl win, and ends up retiring a few years later. Steve Young was the player who made me realize that the NFL quarterback is different from the rest of the pack. A few years before Young arrived in San Francisco, the 49ers were going nowhere. Like any other team, they were stuck in mediocrity. When they drafted Young, I felt that he would have a similar career as that of a generic quarterback, who would be the team’s savior for a few years, before he too would retire.
What does Steve Young do for a living?
Steve Young is a former NFL quarterback who is best known for his time with the San Francisco 49ers. In 1994, Steve Young signed a five-year, $11.25 million contract with the 49ers. A year later, he became the first quarterback to lead his team to the Super Bowl. After a playoff win, Young’s team would go on to win the Super Bowl, making him the first quarterback to win two Super Bowls. As a pro quarterback, Steve Young won 3 Super Bowls, and is still one of the greatest quarterbacks of all-time. He helped the 49ers to their only Super Bowl win in 1994, and though he had a lack of support from the front office, he ended up leading the team to another Super Bowl win in the 1996 season.
