If you’re an NBA fan, you’ve probably heard of Stan Van Gundy, who is currently the head coach of the Detroit Pistons. Van Gundy recently announced that he will not be returning to the Pistons next season. I can’t say I’m all that surprised, since the Pistons have been on a downward trend for some time now.
While Stan Van Gundy’s return to the Orlando Magic front office is currently tenuous, the possibility of him returning is a fascinating one. The Magic GM has never been a beloved figure around the NBA, but he is a coach who has had a lot of success with the Detroit Pistons. That success includes a championship in 2004, and an NBA Finals appearance a year later. That latter accomplishment was achieved despite Detroit’s then-current “Big 3” of Ben Wallace, Chauncey Billups, and Rasheed Wallace, all of whom were one year away from free agency, and thus potentially leaving Detroit.
Former New Orleans Pelicans coach Stan Van Gundy may not have to wait long for a new job. The longtime NBA head coach has already been linked to a return to TNT, where he worked before coaching Zion Williamson and friends for a year. However, if Van Gundy does enter into negotiations with Turner Sports, both parties will have to have an honest and open conversation on his social media accounts.
