Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay grew up in the LA suburbs and suffered through the Raiders-Rams rivalry of the mid-90’s. It was only natural for him to take a shot at the team he grew up cheering for. While attending the annual meeting of the College Football Playoff Executive Committee, which is a bunch of random conference commissioners and athletic directors, McVay decided to prank one of his friends by making him pretend to be Roger Goodell, the commissioner of the NFL.

Cliff Kingsbury saw his Arizona Cardinals team improve significantly last season, going from 5-10-1 in 2019 to 8-8 in 2020. However, their success is largely due to the play of Kyler Murray, who seems to have the makings of a franchise quarterback. At one point, however, Kingsbury thought he wouldn’t get Murray in the 2019 NFL Draft, all thanks to a cruel trick Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay played on him.

In his four years as head coach of the Rams, McVay led Los Angeles to the playoffs three times. He also led the team to a 13-3 record and the Super Bowl during the 2018 season. Kingsbury, meanwhile, hasn’t been as successful as McVay, but he helped the Cardinals go from 5-10-1 to 8-8 in his first two years as Arizona’s head coach. Although their teams are rivals in the same league on the field, they are very good friends off the field. McVay and Kingsbury met through the mutual relationship of former NFL receiver Chas Gessner, who played with Kingsbury for the New England Patriots and under McVay in the UFL. It was crazy because Gessner told me: This kid is going to be a star coach, Kingsbury said, according to the Cardinals’ team website. I was like this: Yes, it’s true. He was the coach of the Orlando Tuskers. Good luck, buddy. He continued: But (Gessner) was right. When you talk to Sean, he’s phenomenal as a person, as a coach, he can talk about football. McVay said the connection was pretty easy for them because they love the sport they coach. As we got to know each other better, it turned out to be a good atmosphere, he’s a great football coach, we both love football, McVay said, according to the Cardinals’ team website.

Sean McVay pulled cruel prank on Cardinals coach

Kingsbury began his first year as head coach of the Cardinals in the 2019 offseason, and Arizona received the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. In fact, everyone knew the Cardinals would take Murray if they selected him. At the same time, however, McVay and Kingsbury went out to dinner with Patrick Mahomes, who played under Kingsbury at Texas Tech University, and some other friends. The Rams’ coach then decided to go with Kingsbury. I knew in a year he was going to laugh at me for taking my shirt off on Hard Knocks, so I’m going to deal with that guy first, McVay said on the Flying Coach podcast , according to a tweet from co-host Peter Schrager.
