The player who will dominate the 2022 NBA Slam Dunk Contest has yet to be crowned, but one thing is for sure: Ja Morant’s incredible performance in this year’s contest has made him a heavy favorite. Here are the 7 players we want to see hooping it up in his place and making their debut at Madison Square Garden.

Ja Morant is a 19-year-old basketball player who has been playing in the NBA since he was 17. He has made his first All-Star team and led the league in scoring last season. Read more in detail here: how old is ja morant.

Ranking Ja Morant and the 7 Players We Want to See in the 2022 NBA Slam Dunk Contest

It’s named NBA All-Star Weekend, but the major event is the NBA Slam Dunk Contest, therefore it should actually be dubbed NBA Slam Dunk Contest Weekend. The game and other challenges are entertaining, but there’s something special about seeing the league’s greatest athletes fight to see who can fly the most spectacularly through the air.

Since the competition is just around the horizon, we decided to list the athletes we hope to see in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest in 2022. While there are certain players that would be fantastic in it, like as Zion Williamson, we didn’t add any injured players.

The rankings are also based on how much of a draw each celebrity would bring to the event, whether it’s because of their celebrity or their athleticism. And, of course, not everyone would be there. It would be difficult to assess seven competitors.

Here’s who we’d want to see without further ado.

7. Portland Trail Blazers’ Anfernee Simons

*{padding:0;margin:0;overflow:hidden} html,bodyheight:100% img,spanposition:absolute;width:100% ;top:0;bottom:0;margin:auto;bodyheight:100% html,bodyheight:100% html,bodyheight:100% html,bodyheight:100% html,bodyheight:100% html,bodyheight:100% html,bodyhe spanheight:1.5em;text-align:center;font:48px/1.5 sans-serif;color:white;text-shadow:0 0 0.5em black;text-shadow:0 0 0.5em black;text-shadow:0 0 0.5em black;text-shadow:0 0 0.5em black;text-shadow:0 0 0.5em black;text-shadow><span>▶</span>

It’s possible that you’ll be startled to find this name on this list. Anfernee Simons is a lesser-known player, despite having a breakthrough year with the Portland Trail Blazers, averaging 15.2 points per game and hitting 43 points in a game earlier this month. Given his short stature of 6 feet 3 inches, he also doesn’t dunk very frequently. Last year, though, he demonstrated his remarkable athleticism by winning the 2021 competition. Simons won the title against Obi Toppin and Cassius Stanley.

Although he may not be a household name, the champion should be given an opportunity to defend his title. As a result, Simons is deserving of a spot in the competition.

6. New York Knicks’ Obi Toppin

*{padding:0;margin:0;overflow:hidden} html,bodyheight:100% img,spanposition:absolute;width:100% ;top:0;bottom:0;margin:auto;bodyheight:100% html,bodyheight:100% html,bodyheight:100% html,bodyheight:100% html,bodyheight:100% html,bodyheight:100% html,bodyhe spanheight:1.5em;text-align:center;font:48px/1.5 sans-serif;color:white;text-shadow:0 0 0.5em black;text-shadow:0 0 0.5em black;text-shadow:0 0 0.5em black;text-shadow:0 0 0.5em black;text-shadow:0 0 0.5em black;text-shadow><span>▶</span>

Given that he lost to Simons in last year’s competition, putting Obi Toppin ahead of him could be a bit contentious. Toppin, on the other hand, must exact his vengeance and demonstrate why he is regarded as one of the league’s best dunkers.

Despite only playing 15.7 minutes per game, the New York Knicks big is enjoying a good sophomore season, ranking second on the team in dunks with 59. He’s been going famous on Twitter for his dunks since he was a freshman at the University of Dayton, and he’s continued to put up some insane numbers in his first two pro seasons.

Toppin would undoubtedly put up a show.

5. Atlanta Hawks’ John Collins

*{padding:0;margin:0;overflow:hidden} html,bodyheight:100% img,spanposition:absolute;width:100% ;top:0;bottom:0;margin:auto;bodyheight:100% html,bodyheight:100% html,bodyheight:100% html,bodyheight:100% html,bodyheight:100% html,bodyheight:100% html,bodyhe spanheight:1.5em;text-align:center;font:48px/1.5 sans-serif;color:white;text-shadow:0 0 0.5em black;text-shadow:0 0 0.5em black;text-shadow:0 0 0.5em black;text-shadow:0 0 0.5em black;text-shadow:0 0 0.5em black;text-shadow><span>▶</span>

John Collins, the Atlanta Hawks’ power forward, is renowned for his outrageous in-game dunks. Last season, you may recall his epic alley-oop dunk against Philadelphia 76ers big man Joel Embiid in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

He’s also participated in the event previously, demonstrating his ability to be inventive. Collins finished fourth in the 2019 NBA Slam Dunk Contest after jumping over a miniature aircraft and putting his foot on the top of it.

Collins’ charisma and agility would make for terrific television.

Minnesota Timberwolves’ Anthony Edwards, No. 4

*{padding:0;margin:0;overflow:hidden} html,bodyheight:100% img,spanposition:absolute;width:100% ;top:0;bottom:0;margin:auto;bodyheight:100% html,bodyheight:100% html,bodyheight:100% html,bodyheight:100% html,bodyheight:100% html,bodyheight:100% html,bodyhe spanheight:1.5em;text-align:center;font:48px/1.5 sans-serif;color:white;text-shadow:0 0 0.5em black;text-shadow:0 0 0.5em black;text-shadow:0 0 0.5em black;text-shadow:0 0 0.5em black;text-shadow:0 0 0.5em black;text-shadow><span>▶</span>

Since his electrifying rookie season last season, Anthony Edwards has emerged as one of the most intriguing players to watch. His increased shot-making abilities and quickness have made him a difficult player to defend, and he has an entertaining personality that would be ideal for the competition (the 20-year old still uses a flip-phone).

Although Edwards has just 37 dunks this season, his explosiveness is undeniable. According to 2K Ratings, he’s the third-best driving dunker in NBA 2K22, and his posters have gone viral on social media. He’d be a lot of fun to watch.

3. Cleveland Cavaliers’ Jarrett Allen

You could wonder whether Jarrett Allen, rather than John Collins or Anthony Edwards, might have greater appeal in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest. However, Allen is enjoying a breakout year with the Cleveland Cavaliers, and this year’s All-Star weekend will be held in Cleveland. So just having his local edge would make things more intriguing.

Allen, who was acquired by the Cavs in the James Harden-Brooklyn Nets deal last season, has developed into one of the game’s top big man dunkers. On practically every play, he appears to snag impossible alley-oops. And his efforts have helped him finish the season second in the NBA in total dunks with 122.

This year, the Cavs center has developed into an All-Star player, and there’s no better way to show the world exactly how good an athlete he is than to have him compete in the dunk contest.

2. Memphis Grizzlies’ Ja Morant

Since he was a standout at Murray State, Ja Morant has been all over our Twitter timelines with his unbelievable athleticism. In his first three seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies, he continued to wow the basketball world with amazing dunks and blocks.

Morant has also had an excellent season, helping the Grizzlies to a top-three Western Conference finish while averaging 25.3 points per game. Morant, the fifth-best driving dunker in NBA 2K22, has proven himself as a legitimate MVP contender, and participation in the dunk contest would only add to his superstar status.

1. Giannis Antetokounmpo or LeBron James

*{padding:0;margin:0;overflow:hidden} html,bodyheight:100% img,spanposition:absolute;width:100% ;top:0;bottom:0;margin:auto;bodyheight:100% html,bodyheight:100% html,bodyheight:100% html,bodyheight:100% html,bodyheight:100% html,bodyheight:100% html,bodyhe spanheight:1.5em;text-align:center;font:48px/1.5 sans-serif;color:white;text-shadow:0 0 0.5em black;text-shadow:0 0 0.5em black;text-shadow:0 0 0.5em black;text-shadow:0 0 0.5em black;text-shadow:0 0 0.5em black;text-shadow><span>▶</span>

So, we’ve saved the longest shot for last. We combined them here because getting at least one would give the competition the glory it deserves. There’s a good chance neither of these stars will ever compete in any upcoming slam dunk contests, so we just combined them here because getting at least one would give the competition the glory it deserves.

Fans have been clamoring for LeBron James to do it his whole career, but he has yet to deliver. Despite his age, the 37-year-old has shown that he still possesses an excellent vertical. On the other side, Giannis Antetokounmpo frequently bullies his way to the hoop and dunks with the best of them. This year, he is sixth in the league in total dunks, and he appeared in the tournament in 2015, although he wasn’t a star at the time.

Having any of these men on the show would give it a new level of popularity that we haven’t seen in a long time, and it would make for some of the most entertaining television we’ve seen all year.
