In Week 8, the New York Giants were defeated by the Kansas City Chiefs in a game that may have been won.
With a record of 2-5, the New York Giants had an opportunity to make an impression on national television during a Week 8 battle against the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football. They had a chance to climb up to second place in the NFC East as well. This would also help them significantly improve their chances of making the playoffs.
The Giants’ defense performed well. Against Patrick Mahomes, they adhered to a tried-and-true game plan of paying two deep safeties. The former MVP was forced to keep the ball and force throws as a result of the tactic. This was exploited by the Giants, who recorded three sacks, two forced fumbles, and an interception.
Mahomes and company were restricted to 20 points by the unit. This is a decent score that gave the Giants offense a chance to win.
Unfortunately for Giants fans, the offense was unable to complete the task. QB Daniel Jones and the Eagles only mustered 228 passing yards and 300 total yards of offense against the much-maligned Chiefs defense. The KC defense has given up the second-lowest total of the season.
The Giants’ offensive troubles this season have been caused by a number of variables. Jones’ erratic decision-making, injuries to Kenny Golladay and Saquon Barkley, and a subpar offensive line are all to blame.
The play-calling by head coach Joe Judge and offensive coordinator Jason Garrett — notably, the cautious manner of the play-calling — may, however, be the most serious concern.
Joe Judge has said that he is not always in favor of accumulating points.

Against the Chiefs, the Giants had multiple instances of excessively cautious play.
In the second quarter, the most blatant case of this occurred. Jason Garrett ordered a 2-yard pass play on 3rd-and-4 from the 7-yard line. Joe Judge then elected to attempt a field goal on 4th-and-2 from the 5-yard line rather than try for six points on 4th-and-2 from the 5-yard line.
The second-year head coach justified his choice after the game, saying:
I had assumed that points would be scarce. Right then, our defense was playing really well…. Tonight, I planned to play a lot to our defense. I was really confident in their ability to play as a team. You may come in and shoot yourself in the foot by insisting that we must score every point available at all times. You can always rely on your analytics sheets…. In the end, I don’t believe that was the game’s deciding factor.
On settling for a field goal, Joe Judge says
While the claim that scoring more points isn’t necessarily better than scoring more points is absurd on its face, Judge was attempting to make a point about old-school football thinking against new-school analytics.
It wasn’t a good argument, and neither was his strategy to score enough field goals to defeat the Chiefs in Kansas City.
The Giants’ next chance to go scoreless comes in Week 10 against the Raiders in Las Vegas.

In the NFC, no lower-tier teams are threatening to take the division’s Wild Card place. Even with a 2-6 record, the G-Men are just two games out of the last playoff place (currently held by the 4-4 Carolina Panthers).
This means that Joe Judge and the Giants are still in the race, but their next game, at home against the Raiders, is a must-win scenario.
The Raiders are having one of their most historic seasons in NFL history. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the Raiders dropped last year’s first-round selection Henry Ruggs III after a tragic vehicle accident that resulted in two felony charges of DUI and reckless driving and a misdemeanor charge of possession of a pistol while under the influence.
After all of this turmoil, it’s tough to say what the Raiders’ emphasis will be when they get in New York, but if the squad from the previous few weeks shows up, the Giants will have their job cut out for them.
Derek Carr’s club has lost two games in a row, against the Denver Broncos and the Philadelphia Eagles. On all sides of the ball, the Raiders have been outstanding… Under interim head coach Rich Bisaccia, the team scored touchdowns instead of settling for field goals.
If Judge doesn’t catch up with contemporary football and follow the former special teams coach’s example, the Giants’ season, and maybe Judge’s tenure as head coach, might be over.
