The NFL is a world renowned piece of American culture. The league has produced many athletes that are now household names and celebrated figures around the globe. However, it wasn’t always this way for black players in football history. Whether it was due to racism, segregation or cultural norms at the time, many African Americans were unable to play major sports professionally until recently (1970s). Despite still having hurdles for minority groups who wish to enter professional sport leagues today, such as Roger Goodell’s recent announcement on player protests during national anthem performances by teams in 2018-2019 season-.

'Mr. Military Was Going to Make Me a Good Little Boy'

On the court, Dennis Rodman is a basketball player from the United States.’s career was characterized by five titles with the “Bad Boy” Detroit Pistons and Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls. However, the Worm spent two seasons with the San Antonio Spurs between his stints with those two teams, one of which was under general manager and vice president of basketball operations Gregg Popovich.

With the Spurs, Rodman’s superior rebounding was wiped out by disagreements with the team and personnel. The eccentric Hall of Famer produced a book on his Spurs time shortly after being moved to Chicago. In particular, how he reacted to Pop’s words and behavior.

Rodman was traded to the Spurs prior of the 1993-94 season after a seven-year stint with the Pistons, certainly his longest with any one franchise. The two-time All-Star was scheduled to team up with Hall of Famer David Robinson in the frontcourt of a Spurs team that had been eliminated from the playoffs four times in a row.

San Antonio received the whole Rodman experience, both good and unpleasant. Despite coming off the bench for 51 of his 128 regular-season games, Dennis the Menace led the league in rebounding for back-to-back seasons. In 1994-95, he also helped the Spurs reach the Western Conference Finals for the first time since 1982-83.

However, things quickly deteriorated in Texas. Rodman missed a significant amount of time in year two due to a shoulder injury sustained in a motorbike accident, in addition to receiving repeated bans. As Hill said on The Whistle Stop Podcast, he was also critical of head coach Bob Hill and his squad as a whole:

“I was curious about his thoughts on the squad.” I simply listened as I worked my way down the roster. What about Avery Johnson, for example? What about David Robinson, for example? Hill added, “He murdered every single guy on the squad.” “‘This squad is soft, and they’ll never win big games,’ he remarked. David Robinson is overpaid and will never get a major break.’

“Dennis wasn’t a nasty man at all.” I had a great time with him.” Hill went on. “I mean, we had two knockdowns, a drag-out, a manager, an umpire, fighting, spit-flying, and at one point, we had to suspend him.”

In a book published shortly after his trade from San Antonio, Rodman thrashed Gregg Popovich.

Popovich was the Spurs’ front-office leader before becoming the iconic head coach that basketball fans know and adore today. Pop spent four years as a Spurs assistant coach and two years as a Golden State Warriors assistant before becoming San Antonio’s general manager and vice president of basketball operations in 1994-95, Rodman’s second season with the organization.

Rodman launched his book Bad as I Wanna Be in 1996, little than a year after his trade to Chicago. Dennis slammed the young, power-hungry GM Popovich in the book.

Rodman stated, “The greatest issue in San Antonio was Gregg Popovich, the general manager.” “He wanted to be the general manager and coach at the same time.” Every day, he stood around and held Bob Hill’s hand, telling him, “OK, you’ve got to do this now.” It’s past time for you to pay attention to what I’m saying.’ Popovich would jump Hill’s a** if he didn’t do it, so Hill would turn around and jump someone else’s a**. S*** runs downhill, and I always appeared to be at the bottom.”

Rodman then clarified that his issues were more with Pop than with Hill.

“Popovich wanted to be known as the man who controlled Dennis Rodman is a basketball player from the United States., so he enlisted Hill’s help. Popovich had a significant difficulty in this regard. Mr. Military promised that he would turn me into a nice young boy and a good soldier. He lost sight of everything else, and when he realized he couldn’t accomplish anything with me, he slandered me and sold me for pennies on the dollar. Then he claimed it was for the team’s benefit.”

Popovich dealt the Worm to the Bulls in a straight-up trade for Will Perdue after a poor Western Conference Finals performance. We can confirm that San Antonio’s return was, in fact, close to nothing, whether Dennis’ perspective on Pop is correct or not.

Both Rodman and Popovich were successful in their own right.

Whatever you think of the Rodman/Pop combination, the Spurs had a terrific year together. Robinson’s MVP season didn’t hurt, either. But it’s difficult to disagree with a 62-20 record, the best in the NBA, and a trip to the NBA Finals.

Even yet, it’s clear that neither mythology would have been better off without the other.

Rodman’s off-the-court antics weren’t enough to keep him from winning three more rebounding titles and three more championships with Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and Phil Jackson. In his spectacular 14-year career, the two-time Defensive Player of the Year won seven overall rebounding championships and five rings.

In the case of Popovich, Rodman’s allegations about wanting to be the head coach may have been true. Pop sacked Hill after a 3-15 start in 1996-97 and named himself as the new head coach. He guided San Antonio to its first NBA Finals triumph three years later, the first of five he’d win in the Alamo. In addition, the unconventional 73-year-old just achieved his 1,336th victory, becoming him the league’s all-time winningest coach.

Popovich’s bad handling of Rodman may have helped him recognize the sort of players he needed on his squad. Dennis the Menace was likewise unlikely to be controlled by any coach or general manager.

While the drama would have been interesting, we’re pleased they didn’t work together for more than a season.
