It was a long time in coming, but as the NBA free agency period began, the Dallas Mavericks decided to get back to the basics, signing Jason Kidd to a 10-day contract on Wednesday. It’s a move that was expected, as the Mavericks have been linked to Kidd for months. But when the move was officially announced, there was plenty of confusion.
Jason Kidd will be the new head coach of the Dallas Mavericks, according to Dan Friedell of ESPN. The Mavs recently parted ways with Rick Carlisle after one year with the team, and Jason has been on the wishlist of many Mavs fans since he was drafted by the Knicks with the second overall pick in the 2001 NBA Draft. With the hiring of Kidd, the Mavs also fired their GM, Donnie Nelson, and will finish out the years left on his contract.
The Dallas Mavericks are in the process of searching for a new head coach to replace Rick Carlisle, who was fired at the end of the season.. The star point guard has apparently let Governor Mark Cuban know who he wants to see as his next head coach. Cuban, however, went in a different direction.
Kidd, who won an NBA championship with the Mavs in 2011 and was most recently an assistant with the Los Angeles Lakers, was the obvious choice for the job.
Former Mavs head coach Rick Carlisle recommended him for the job, which also worked in his favor.
I hope Jason Kidd becomes the next coach of the Mavs because he and Luka have so much in common as players, Tim McMahon said onESPN. I think it would be a great situation for Luke, and I think it would be a great situation for Jason. I am the only person on the planet who has coached both boys and knows all their unique qualities as basketball players. I think it would make a great wedding, but that’s just an opinion.
That said, how will it go with Luke?
Luka Doncic is an active supporter of Mavs assistant coach Jamal Mosley. He has what it takes to be a head coach, Doncic said after Mosley replaced him for a game in a win over the Knicks earlier this season. He could definitely be a head coach.

Doncic has never made it a secret that he wants to see the next Mavs coach: Assistant coach Jamal Mosley. But it looks like Kidd was the only choice.
According to sources close to the team, some people are upset that Mosley didn’t even get a chance to be interviewed.
His lack of experience may have ruined his chances, while reverse Kidd has coached Milwaukee Bucks and Brooklyn Nets teams. He was also an assistant coach on the Lakers team that won the NBA championship last season.

Perhaps the biggest question is this: Did Mark Cuban make the right decision in hiring Kidd?
Stephen A. Smith of ESPN noted that one of the reasons the Lakers did not hire him as head coach was his off-court problems, which included a guilty plea to a DUI and a subsequent arrest and guilty plea to domestic violence.
However, Kidd hasn’t been in foul trouble in almost a decade, which in no way excuses his past transgressions, but it clearly showed Cuban that Kidd has matured and is ready to be a head coach again.
He may have been at the top of the list because he was able to bring in players like Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Bucks, who was named MVP of the league last year.
The biggest test for Kidd could be the development of his relationship with Doncic, which will be very important if the Mavs want to make the playoffs next year.
Whether this duo manages to build a strong bond on the field will determine whether or not Doncic stays in Dallas.
