LaVar Ball is the father of Lonzo, LaMelo and LiAngelo. He’s said openly that his sons would have never reached this level if they worked for anyone else in their respective sports, such as Michael Jordan or LeBron James.

The “lavar ball height” is a topic that has been in the news lately. LaVar Ball was right all along, and his sons are proving it by being the best players on their respective teams.

Lonzo and LaMelo Ball Are Undeniably Proving LaVar Ball Was Right All Along

In 2017, it was impossible to turn on ESPN without seeing LaVar Ball’s face on the television. LaVar Ball, the flamboyant father of phenoms Lonzo Ball, LiAngelo Ball, and LaMelo Ball, boldly said that his three boys were about to revolutionize the NBA as we know it. To no one’s surprise, the older Ball was insulted and ridiculed mercilessly.

Let’s fast forward to the year 2022. The top-seeded Chicago Bulls have Lonzo as their starting point guard. LaMelo is the reigning Rookie of the Year and the face of the Hornets’ upstart franchise. And now that people have seen how wonderful his boys are, LaVar can proudly wear his “I told you so” cap.

LaMelo Ball and Lonzo Ball have lived up to the promise.

It would have been reasonable to see both Lonzo and LaMelo collapse under the burden, given their high expectations. Rather, the two young stars are establishing themselves as serious NBA players.

First and foremost, there’s Lonzo. When the Los Angeles Lakers chose him second overall in the 2017 NBA Draft, the fifth-year guard didn’t turn out the way the Lakers had hoped. He was traded to the New Orleans Pelicans in the Anthony Davis blockbuster after two seasons. The 24-year-old then inked a four-year, $80 million contract with the Chicago Bulls last summer.

In the Windy City, Ball has found a home. The 6-foot-6 guard has a 12.9-point, 5.5-rebound, 5.1-assist, and 1.9-steal per-game average. He has improved his 3-point shooting percentage from 30.5 percent last season to 41.8 percent this season. Most significantly, he is the team’s main facilitator and a key defender for the Bulls, who are looking for their first postseason participation since 2017.

LaMelo’s path to the NBA was much less travelled than that of his elder brother. While Lonzo Ball followed the usual one-and-done path out of UCLA, the younger Ball traveled from Chino Hills to Lithuania, Los Angeles, Ohio, and finally Australia. After the Hornets selected him third overall in the 2020 draft, he moved once again to Charlotte.

While Lonzo is an excellent starting point guard, LaMelo is a true superstar. Melo is averaging 19.4 points, 7.3 rebounds, 7.6 assists, and 1.7 steals after winning Rookie of the Year. The 20-year-old is leading the Hornets’ best offense with a mix of highlight-reel passes and game-winning heroics.

LaVar Ball was correct in predicting that Lonzo and LaMelo would be stars.

There are a couple things LaVar got wrong before he gets all the praise. As he famously said while the guard was at UCLA, Lonzo is not better than Stephen Curry. Big Baller Brand never become the worldwide brand that would overtake Nike in the future. And, although we haven’t seen it, we have it on excellent authority that he would not be able to beat Michael Jordan in a one-on-one match.

Lonzo and LaMelo, on the other hand, are making their father seem like a genius.

Lonzo is usually regarded as an above-average starting point guard in his sixth season. He’s on track to become the only player in league history to average at least five assists, five rebounds, one steal, and one block while hitting at least three triples per game over the course of a complete season, thanks to his well-rounded arsenal. Not bad for a guard who is still just 24 years old.

LaVar, on the other hand, got it just right with LaMelo. Few players in the NBA are more entertaining to watch than the Hornets point guard, who is considered by his father to be the greatest of the Ball siblings. When compared to Kobe Bryant, Ball hasn’t even scratched the surface of his potential as a player.

They may not be the GOATs their father envisioned, but seeing his two boys play at a high level for winning teams proves LaVar was correct.

Lonzo Ball and LaMelo Ball have a bright future ahead of them.

Five years may be insufficient to determine if LaVar Ball was “on the ball.” After all, we have yet to see the three brothers play together and win a championship. However, we can see in both Lonzo and LaMelo that there is more greatness to come.

Next month in Cleveland, the youngest Ball will play in his first All-Star Game. It seems to be the first of many for LaMelo, who is the second-youngest player in NBA history to get a triple-double. Most veterans don’t play with the same ease that Ball does at the age of 20. Consider where he’ll be in two or three years.

Lonzo, on the other hand, is unlikely to be the celebrity that his younger brother is. Lonzo’s approach, on the other hand, is conducive to success, as seen by the Bulls’ current position atop the Eastern Conference. Not to add, his year-over-year shooting statistics show that he is capable of considerable gains.

At this pace, both Lonzo’s Bulls and LaMelo’s Hornets may be in the playoffs, perhaps facing off. If it occurs, LaVar will be in the front row with a big grin on his face. Because the Big Baller was correct in the end.

Basketball Reference provided all statistics, while Spotrac provided contract data.
