Throughout the NBA playoffs, it was apparent the Los Angeles Lakers needed a boost. James was never his best on the road, nor did he show his dominance while the Lakers were struggling to an 8th seed. So, the Lakers signed LeBron’s old friend Larry Nance, in hopes that he would give James a boost in the Finals and maybe help him win his 5th ring. Nance is 35 years old and has not played in the league since 2016, but he may be able to help the Lakers, even though he is not a true center.
As it stands, Los Angeles Lakers fans may be the most impatient fans in all of sports. After all, the Lakers have been a mess for a few years now, but they are still the Lakers, and they have the greatest basketball player alive playing his home games for them. It’s been this way for a long time, but in 2016, things started to change. That’s when the Lakers traded D’Angelo Russell to the Brooklyn Nets. Russell was a top pick in the 2015 NBA Draft, and he was supposed to be the Lakers’ point guard of the future.
LeBron James has been on a quest this season for the fifth consecutive year. He’s made it there three times, but has lost each time in the NBA Finals. James’s future with the Los Angeles Lakers has been a topic of debate over the past month, after his agent Rich Paul suggested his client could be open to changing teams.. The Los Angeles Lakers, who just formed a Big Three with LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, and Anthony Davis, now need to add depth to really create a championship contender.
Several names have been linked to the Lakers since the Westbrook deal, but the Lakers may bring back an old buddy to help James win his fifth NBA title: Dwight Howard.
Dwight Howard has played for the Los Angeles Lakers twice.
The Lakers are no stranger to Dwight Howard. Howard was traded to the Lakers in 2012 to play alongside Kobe Bryant during his peak, after averaging 20.0 points per game for the fourth time in five seasons with the Orlando Magic.
He finished the season averaging 17.1 points and 12.4 rebounds per game, leading the NBA for the sixth time in six seasons, but the Lakers fell short of expectations. The Lakers finished 45-37 and made the playoffs, but the San Antonio Spurs swept the Lakers in the first round due to a late-season Bryant injury.
The next summer, Howard departed for the Houston Rockets, but returned to LA in 2019-20 as a totally different player. He wasn’t a dominating big man anymore, but he was still a valuable role player and a strong defensive presence for LeBron James and his teammates. In 2019-20, Howard averaged 7.5 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks for the Lakers, and he was instrumental in the team’s championship, which was James’ fourth in his career.
Howard, on the other hand, signed a free agent contract with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2020. Last season, he averaged 7.0 points and 8.4 rebounds per game for the Sixers.
Is Howard, on the other hand, on his way back to Los Angeles for the third time?
On the Lakers, LeBron James may reunite with Dwight Howard.

After dealing for Russell Westbrook, the Lakers don’t have many players on their roster. They have Westbrook, LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Marc Gasol, and Alfonzo McKinnie, among others.
They need depth.
Given that Westbrook, James, and Davis have the potential to be one of the best Big Threes in NBA history, there should be plenty of great veterans interested in joining the Lakers in their quest for a title.
Howard, according to reports, is one of the players that is intrigued.
“Can you guess who may be returning for a third time? Dwight Howard is ready to return to the center position, according to Broderick Turner of the Los Angeles Times.
The Lakers are in desperate need of another big man. In 2021-22, Davis may spend a lot of time at the five, so they’ll need someone to back him up or play the five anytime Davis is at the four. Because Andre Drummond is a free agency, Howard may be one of their best choices. He’s also more athletic than Gasol at this stage in his career and can provide significant defensive value to the club.
Last season, Howard averaged 0.9 blocks per 17.3 minutes and a defensive win share of 2.6, which measures how many wins his defense contributes to his team.
No, Howard isn’t a game-changing talent anymore, but he can still be the valuable role player the Lakers need to win another championship.
What other players might join LeBron James in Los Angeles?
According to a league source, the #Lakers are “very interested” in signing Carmelo Anthony. Melo’s relationship with LeBron James dates back to high school, thus the Lakers have been mentioned as a possible destination. Last season with Portland, Anthony shot 40.9 percent from three-point range, which was a career high.

The Lakers don’t have a lot of financial freedom, but LeBron James is a player who other teams want to play with in order to win championships, therefore there are plenty of veterans the Lakers may seriously consider signing.
Patty Mills is a name that has been connected to the team, according to Broderick Thomas. Other players said to be interested in moving to Los Angeles include Wayne Ellington and Carmelo Anthony.
While the Lakers need Howard’s depth down low, they also require shooting. Last season, James hit 36.5 percent from three-point range, while Westbrook shot 31.5 percent and Davis barely shot 26 percent from long range. Mills, Ellington, and Anthony are all players that can bring shooting to LA, which makes them almost too obvious, particularly considering Anthony has always been good friends with James.
Overall, the Lakers have a number of choices for bolstering their championship-contending team around their Big Three, and some of the names listed above may not even come to Los Angeles. However, a team that has Russ, LeBron, and AD, as well as Dwight, Melo, Mills, and/or Ellington, might be scary.
We’ll see who the next veterans are to be welcomed to the Lake Show.
