You’re slipping behind if you’re not making progress. That seems to be Justin Thomas’ mentality on the PGA Tour. Thomas, who is coming off a mediocre personal season but is riding high after leading the United States to a stunning Ryder Cup victory, is already plotting his strategy for the 2022 season.
Only one tournament victory, but a strong showing overall.

Justin Thomas usually enters a couple of October PGA events that are officially part of the next year’s season, but they are more of a victory lap after a successful season.
Whether he sticks to that schedule or extends his two-month sabbatical to three months remains to be seen, but Thomas might be forgiven for taking a break. He is coming off a 2-1-1 record in his Ryder Cup matches, leading the United States to a 19-9 victory over Europe at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin.
Prior to it, Thomas had a tough season on his own. He only won one, at The Players Championship, which is as close to a major as a tournament can get without really being one. It was his 14th win on the PGA Tour in the last six seasons.
Following his victory at The Players, Thomas embarked on a run of 11 consecutive finishes outside the top ten. Thomas did, however, finish fourth in The Northern Trust and the Tour Championship, putting him in fifth position on the season’s official money list with $6,537,153.
The first daring move of the 2022 PGA season has been made by Justin Thomas.
After six years on the bag for the world’s sixth-ranked golfer, Jimmy Johnson is no longer Justin Thomas’ caddy. Thomas announced on Instagram that the two had chosen to part ways.
According to Golf Digest, Johnson, a recent entrant into the Caddie Hall of Fame, has caddied for Thomas since 2013.
Thomas said on social media, “I 100% did not fire him, since Jimmy came to me after the Ryder Cup and informed me he has chosen to explore other possibilities.”
While that theory is conceivable, it’s worth recalling that after winning The Players Championship in March, Thomas had a lengthy run of unusually poor performances.
Thomas didn’t spend any time in appointing Johnson’s replacement. In reality, he has a history with his new caddy, who is coming out of retirement after serving as a full-time caddie for one of the PGA Tour’s most illustrious players.

Jim “Bones” Mackay accepted Justin Thomas’ invitation to restart his profession as a caddy after four years as an on-course reporter for NBC and Golf Channel, according to Golf Channel.
“It came out of nowhere not long ago. “I simply have a lot of admiration for (Thomas) as a person and a player,” Mackay said. “It was a life-changing phone call, and I said yes.”
Before departing for network roles, Mackay was most known for caddying for Phil Mickelson for 25 years. He did, however, respond when Thomas required replacements for Johnson twice, first at the 2018 Sony Open and again for a period starting with the 2020 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational, which Thomas won by three shots.
According to Golf.com, Thomas stated at the time, “‘Bones’ knows my game well enough not just from when he caddied for Phil, but simply seeing me play a number of rounds when he’s commentating to where if I do ask him a question, he’s not just saying anything to make me happy.” “He really has feedback and believes he understands enough about my game to offer and be of assistance, which he was.”
Mackay will continue to work on television as time permits.
“I like caddying, and I enjoyed my job with NBC/Golf Channel,” he added, “but Justin Thomas is the man.”
