Sure, Julio Jones was once the fastest man in college football (and a few other events). But his personal bests paled in comparison to his professional achievements, which is why the Falcons wide receiver is considered the best receiver in all of football.
Julio Jones is one of the most feared wide receivers in the NFL. At 6’3″ and 220lbs, he’s built like an NFL muscle car and he can run like one, too. That said, Julio isn’t perfect. Julio Jones is hailed as one of the best receivers in the NFL, but how is that possible when he’s never faced a quarterback like Russell Gage?
Russell Gage was a 6’3″ wide receiver drafted in the 7th round of the 2012 NFL Draft; he had a great college career at LSU, and was expected to be a slot receiver in the NFL. He never got that chance, though, and spent an entire season on the practice squad before being cut. The next year, he was drafted again by the Tennessee Titans. This year, he made the team and was signed to a contract. Last week, he was put on IR, and will not return this season.. He was a true perennial talent who used a terrifying combination of size, speed and strength to excel as one of the best receivers in the NFL. Although his career with the Falcons officially ended last week, Jones’ impact is still felt in Atlanta. In the end, Matt Ryan will have to rely on Russell Gage even more than he did a year ago. And if the young player continues to follow Jones’ advice, he has a chance to change his life forever.
Julio Jones gave Russell Gage a taste of Atlanta greatness
The Falcons have begun preparing for life after Jones in 2018. After selecting Kelvin Ridley of Georgia in the first round, they selected Gage in the sixth round. A talented athlete who played on both sides of the ball at LSU, he came to Atlanta as a prospect who needed to train. Fortunately for Gage, he had the opportunity to have one of the most impressive seasons for a receiver in his rookie year. During the 2018 season, Jones accounted for 1,677 yards on 113 catches. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound wideout caught eight touchdowns and was selected to the Pro Bowl for the sixth time in his career. Although Jones’ numbers dropped the following year, he still posted an impressive 99/1,394/6. Meanwhile, Gage has proven himself capable of taking on a larger role. After catching six passes for 63 yards as a rookie, he has now caught 49 of 74 targets for 446 yards and a touchdown. It appears that he received career-changing advice from Jones during his breakthrough season in 2019.

So when he gave Gage advice, Jones tried not to overcomplicate the situation. According to ESPN’s Michael Rothstein, the former Falcons star gave his replacement some advice: In progress. That was his main goal, Gage said. Speed, escape velocity, run. Many guys are too busy thinking and planning their routes. Understand that even if you make a mistake, you make it at full speed. He added: In progress. The main advantage of the receiver is its speed. So whatever it is, you need to show it. The adoption of the draft in the middle of the 2019 season changed everything for the young wideout. Gage was fourth on the team in receiving yards, and his role was increased in 2020 by Jones’ injury problems. He operated mainly in the slot and set records in all areas. By building a relationship with Ryan, Gage has proven that he can be a reliable weapon for the Falcons. But if Jones leaves, could he improve on his numbers from last year: 72 catches for 786 yards and four touchdowns?
What does the future hold for Jones and his former Falcons teammate?
. The stakes are high for both wideouts this season. In Gage’s case, he needs to show he can make a consistent impact without Jones drawing attention from defenders. If he continues on the same path, he can expect a nice rise next season. Gage will earn $2.183 million in the final year of his rookie contract, but if he takes the next step, he could triple or quadruple his salary. As a free agent, he has plenty of reasons to be involved in the first year of the post-Jones era. The future is also in play for Winner, a seven-time Pro Bowler. The Tennessee Titans are hoping Jones can find his All-Pro form again after a season shortened by injuries. At 32, though, you wonder if Jones will fall off the proverbial cliff. If he doesn’t live up to expectations in his first year at Tennessee, could the experiment be over? Ironically, while Jones’ career is headed in the wrong direction, Gage’s future looks brighter than ever. And if his former teammate’s advice translates into more success on the field, it won’t be long before Gage runs to the bank to deposit a large contract bonus check.
