Jordan Spieth’s Hole-in-1 Ended up in the Water and Earned Tony Romo $2

Jordan Spieth is the hottest golfer in the world, winning 13 tournaments in the last year, including the U.S. Open and the PGA Championship. He’s also hot off an amazing hole-in-one at the Masters. The hole-in-one was the first ace in the history of the tournament, and it was the second-strictest penalty in golf as it was a three stroke penalty (one stroke for every ball that went into the water).

Jordan Spieth’s 45-month run without a win on the PGA Tour, which ended at the start of the 2021 season, has led to much speculation. After all, golfers as talented as Spieth rarely lose. But a mating shot with his friend Tony Romo at a charity tournament showed how bad he was.

Because if you think you’ve got a hole-in-one and the ball still lands in the glass, you’re really having a meltdown.

For three years, starting in 2015, playing in the tournament with Jordan Spieth meant playing for second place. Spieth has won 10 times in 27 months on the PGA Tour and that winning streak includes three triumphs in three major golf tournaments and top-four finishes in three Grand Slams. In those three seasons, he won $27 million in prize money and finished first, fifth and second in the Official World Golf Ranking.

And then the bottom fell out. Spieth finished 17th, 44th and 82nd after three seasons without a win. When he missed the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open in January of this year, Spieth dropped to 92nd on the list. Then lightning struck again. Spieth finished in the top 10 in four of the next six tournaments, won the Valero Texas Open and finished third at the Masters.

Spieth did not play in the PGA Championship or the U.S. Open, but he did make it to the 149th hole. The British Open is 22nd in the world and behind John Rahm in terms of top ten finishes this season.

Spieth played with Romo, a former Cowboys quarterback who now covers NFL games on CBS, at a charity event outside Dallas in April 2020, and the two made a friendly bet about their game. Romo described it as a dollar a hole, with the rate doubling for a birdie and tripling for an eagle, although the actual stakes can be higher.

As they reached the par-3 17th hole at Maridoe Golf Club, Spieth’s tee shot flew into the cup in flight. A hole in one, huh? No. The ball bounced off the cup and rolled into a nearby water hazard. According to Golf Digest, a cup spacer was the culprit. This made it easier to search for bullets in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, when you didn’t have to touch everything that didn’t need to be touched.

I said: It’s an incredible move. I’m so happy for you, but you did 5, I did 3, so you lost. So you owe me, Romo said last week. And so he is: No, I made a hole in it. This is madness. (It was an ace) while the cut was normal and all.

I agree with you. But, you know, rules are rules and that’s golf. You still owe me $2 for the hole.

Spieth was just a brand for Romo that day, not a competitor, and it didn’t affect the tournament results, just his portfolio.

PGA star regarded Romo as his personal ATM

.

Spieth is from Dallas and Romo spent his entire NFL career there. Of course, they got to know each other better over the years and still play golf together. In a 2015 interview on Showtime’sJim Rome, Spieth said their games are a second source of income because Romo is too stubborn to make a reasonable number of shots on the front and back nines.

He likes to play two or three balls a side, which means I’m usually on the winning side, Spieth said, according to Bleacher Report.

So what is the amount of financial loss?

I can’t even count that high, Spieth joked.

That may still be the case, but Romo is close to getting back on track.
