It takes a lot more than scoring points and winning championships to become the greatest basketball player in the NBA. Since being selected 15th overall in the 2013 NBA Draft, Antetokounmpo has gone a long way. He’s put in a lot of effort to get his current level of expertise.
If Tatum wants to push his game to the next level, he need look no farther than the Greek Freak, according to MacMullan, a former Celtics writer who previously worked for Sports Illustrated and ESPN. She recently said on The Bill Simmons Podcast that Tatum still has work to do in order to go from star to superstar.
Antetokounmpo’s poised play, according to MacMullan, sets him apart from the other stars.
“Even when he gets irritated with a referee,” she continued, “he doesn’t get rattled – something that Jayson Tatum, perhaps, should learn a little bit about.” He keeps his cool at all times. It’s critical when you’re the boss and everyone is looking at you.”
Antetokounmpo isn’t known for yelling at referees. Tatum does it often.
Celtics supporters, according to MacMullan, should be concerned.

After a poor shooting effort, the second-seeded Celtics lost their opening game of the series at home. The third-seeded Milwaukee Bucks took homecourt advantage in Game 1, but were blasted out in Game 2 as Boston tied the series at one game each. It’s still anyone’s series, but Celtics supporters should be anxious, according to MacMullan.
“Celtics supporters should be concerned,” she continued, “since (Antetokounmpo) has yet to perform well.” He’s done some incredible things, but he’s also averaging five and a half turnovers a game. That is not likely to continue.
“I think they figured it out in the second part of Game 2 and began deploying their shooters as screeners.” Grant Williams, Rob Williams, and (Al) Horford have all done a fantastic job one-on-one with Giannis. They realized they were attempting to double team in Game 1. That’s committing suicide.
“Now you’re going for broke with him. You can’t afford to do that if Grayson Allen, for example, is setting the screen. You have to account for him, particularly in Milwaukee.”
All eyes will be on Milwaukee’s superstar and Boston’s almost-superstar in Game 3 on Saturday.
