Jarrett Allen had a night to remember, but he wasn’t the only story in Houston. The Rockets ended up with two big wins over Cleveland on Wednesday, and James Harden had 29 points in one of them.

Evan Mobley was compared to Anthony Davis and Chris Bosh before the 2021 NBA Draft. Scouts and executives thought he was the ideal contemporary center, one who could spread the floor and depend on athleticism as much as size.
However, as soon as the Cavaliers signed Allen to a new deal, they made it obvious that Mobley would not be playing center. Some members of Mobley’s camp, according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, were perplexed by Cleveland’s financial commitment to The Fro.
The club signed Allen to a five-year, $100 million deal four days after picking Mobley. In the current NBA climate, several draft experts and scouts believe Mobley has the potential to grow into a franchise center. In actuality, Mobley and his crew believed this was plausible as well, so there was some chin rubbing when Allen was paid.

Jarrett Allen’s two-way potential was initially evident in his first few seasons with the Brooklyn Nets. But he’s had an even bigger influence in Cleveland.
Allen has averaged 16.8 points, 10.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.4 blocks in his first 28 games. According to NBA.com, he’s shooting over 70% from the field and ranks eighth in player impact estimate.
Allen has shown to be much more than a rim-roller since his days with the Nets. Allen can seek out deep position in the post because to Mobley’s propensity to play on the perimeter and grab the ball with the free-throw line stretched. This season, he’s done it with greater aggressiveness and efficacy, knocking post defenders off the dribble and finishing in the restricted area with a variety of jump hooks and drop-step finishes.
In pick-and-roll, the 23-year-old also feeds off Darius Garland. Another of Cleveland’s foundational players, Garland, has become better at attracting extra defenders when he goes downhill, allowing Allen to fill the gap and become a recipient of lobs and easy baskets around the rim.
With Allen on the floor, the Cavaliers are 2.3 points per 100 possessions better offensively. On the opposite end, he continues to anchor the paint. With him in the center, the Cavs allow 2.9 fewer points per 100 possessions.
Cleveland’s big frontcourt terrorizes opposing offenses. According to NBA.com, the two-man combo of Mobley and Allen had a defensive rating of 95.9 in 518 minutes together. With a 104.2 offensive rating, they manage to have some offensive success.
Allen’s development as a low-post threat and his sustained defensive prowess complement Mobley perfectly. They also emphasize why the Cavs were successful in acquiring Harden.
The Cavaliers benefit the most from James Harden’s deal.

Sure, James Harden was a standout performer for the Nets last season (when healthy) and has showed indications of resuming his All-NBA form in recent games. Even still, it’s difficult to dispute that the Cavs won the megadeal that sent The Beard to Brooklyn.
Allen, who has been able to adapt himself with Mobley on the court, seems to be a legitimate franchise center for Cleveland. What did the other groups get?
Harden was acquired by the Nets. They had to part with Allen, Caris LeVert, and a lot of draft capital as well. If The Beard can help Brooklyn win a championship, only time will tell. For the time being, all the Nets have to show is an early departure from the playoffs.
Caris LeVert was acquired by the Indiana Pacers, and he is now one of the players Indiana might deal before the deadline. The Houston Rockets, on the other hand? Victor Oladipo gave them virtually nothing. The draft capital is fantastic, but fleshing it out will take years.
Cavs fans will remember their role in the Harden trade fondly. It brought them Allen, who is already an important element of the team’s present and future success.
