The Los Angeles Rams are not playing well this season, but they have one player who is doing just fine. Jared Goff has the NFL’s longest active consecutive games with a touchdown pass streak at 23 games.
The jared goff trade is a question that has been asked for a while. Jared Goff still owns arguably the NFL’s most embarrassing streak, and he shouldn’t expect it to end soon.
When the Detroit Lions traded veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams and acquired Jared Goff earlier this year, they understood they were starting over.
However, as has always been the case in Detroit, the Lions will never be able to really embrace a new look. Despite playing well at times this season, Goff has been plagued by an embarrassing trend that dates back to his freshman year and has followed him all the way to Michigan.

We need to start from the beginning to properly comprehend why we’re even writing this tale.
Goff joined a Rams club that had just relocated to California after two decades in St. Louis when he was drafted first overall in 2016. The Rams went 4-5 after a 3-1 start in their new home, losing four of their next five games and entering a Week 10 matchup with Ryan Tannehill and the Miami Dolphins.
Case Keenum, the experienced quarterback who had completed 61 percent of his throws for over 2,100 yards, nine touchdowns, and 11 interceptions during the first two months of the season, was benched by then-Rams head coach Jeff Fisher. Goff inherited a great squad in desperate need of an offensive spark, one that was still in contention for the NFC playoffs.
Those playoff hopes were short-lived. Over seven starts, Goff completed 54.7 percent of his throws for 1,089 yards, five touchdowns, and seven interceptions. During that span, the Rams only scored 20 points twice and lost every game, finishing 4-12.

Following the season, the Rams dismissed Fisher with three games remaining and hired Sean McVay, the wunderkind offensive coordinator of the Washington Football Team. Whatever your opinion of Goff as a quarterback, he was the starting quarterback for a Rams club that reached the playoffs three times in four years.
Now that Goff has arrived in Detroit, he has swiftly adjusted to Lions history by losing his first four starts. He’s 42-20 as a starter with McVay as his head coach as of this writing, and 0-11 when he’s had someone else in that position.
The streak is an embarrassment for Goff’s whole career.
Whatever you think of Goff’s entire career, he isn’t close to being a failure. He’s on track to join Alex Smith as a capable No. 1 overall selection who guided his club to the playoffs on several times while not seeming totally lost in the process.
All of this is true while also demonstrating that Goff’s winless run without McVay is an embarrassment to his career. In any sport, there are expectations that come with being a first-round choice, much alone a No. 1 overall pick. Those are the guys who must lead their teams and give an additional push to convert a 21-17 fourth-quarter deficit into a 24-21 win.
Goff’s 11 defeats were all by eight points or less. That includes the Lions’ contentious defeat to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 3 when referees failed to call a delay of game. Ravens kicker Justin Tucker scored a game-winning 66-yard field goal two plays later.

Still, how much of it can be blamed on the referees, and how much can be blamed on the Lions’ offense for converting just 30% of third-down attempts? In this case, you’ll need someone who finished first overall to demonstrate why they were chosen so highly.
Look no farther than Goff’s 299 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions in the Lions’ Week 4 defeat to Justin Fields and the Chicago Bears. He did, however, lose two fumbles, one of which was at the Bears’ 8-yard line. Fields immediately guided Chicago to a 14-0 lead with a six-play, 89-yard scoring drive.
That turnover isn’t completely Goff’s fault, but neither is Detroit’s 4-of-11 third-down performance. In addition, the Lions only converted one of their three fourth-down opportunities.
Goff shouldn’t expect his winning run to come to an end very soon.
If Lions supporters are expecting Goff to end his run anytime soon, they must have been born during the Stafford era and be unaware of the team’s proclivity for inflicting misery.
- The Lions will face Kirk Cousins and the Vikings in Week 5 in Minnesota. Since 2017, the Vikings have won seven consecutive games versus the Lions.
- In Week 6, the Lions travel home to face Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals at Ford Field. The Bengals’ much-improved attack may be too much for Goff and his teammates to handle.
- In Week 7, Stafford and the Rams will face the Lions. That’s all there is to it.
The Lions may not be favored until Halloween, when they visit the Philadelphia Eagles (1-3). When do you think they’ll win next? Now would be a great moment for Goff to show why he was the first overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.
