A once-beloved NBA franchise recently fired their GM and will have a new one by the end of the month. There is much speculation that this could be related to an impending sale, with European teams in particular being linked as potential buyers. What does it mean for basketball’s future?

'It Doesn't Look Like We're Going to Be Hanging Banner No. 18 Any Time Soon'

In each of the previous two seasons, the Boston Celtics have easily been the NBA’s most disappointing team. They had a disappointing year last year after reaching three Eastern Conference Finals in four years from 2017 to 2020, and have subsequently begun slowly in 2021-22.

Indeed, it looks like Celtics veteran and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer Bob Cousy is fed up with his old club following a string of dismal performances lately.

This season, the Boston Celtics have had a lot of trouble.

It’s normally a formula for success to have two players who average over 24.0 points per game, but that hasn’t been the case for the Celtics this season.

Despite having Jayon Tatum (25.5 points, 8.4 rebounds per game) and Jaylen Brown (24.1 points, 6.3 rebounds per game), the Celtics have begun 19-21 and are now ranked 10th in the Eastern Conference.

They were also awful over a recent three-week span, going 3-6 with some absolutely ugly performances. The Celtics wasted a 25-point lead against the New York Knicks and then lost on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer. The Cs lost a number of previous games in which they led late in the fourth quarter.

Overall, first-year head coach Ime Udoka has had a rocky start, and one of the franchise’s greatest icons isn’t happy with the team’s performance.

Bob Cousy slammed the Celtics’ recent performance.

During his NBA career, former point guard Bob Cousy was one of the best Celtics players of all time. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame after winning six titles and being named league MVP in 1956-57. He also earned 13 All-Star selections and had career averages of 18.4 points and 7.5 assists.

However, Cooz does not seem to be pleased with the Celtics’ performance this season.

He recently told The Boston Globe, “There’s something wrong.” “It’s simply a playground,” she says. Run around the room and snap the first picture that appears. There doesn’t seem to be any sensible guidance.”

Cousy feels that “a stabilizing component is lacking” and that a competent point guard would assist them in some of these important instances when they have lost their composure and, as a result, the game.

“When we established a 6-8 point lead, that’s when I’d take it home.” “I simply couldn’t let us lose the lead,” he stated, adding that Kyrie Irving was a good point player but struggled off the court. He also said that he admired Kemba Walker, but that Walker was a shooting guard. “At that point, you need a penetrating point guard who is a danger, and then he passes to the Tatums and Browns.”

Marcus Smart has started at point guard for the Celtics this season, but he isn’t a natural fit for the position. Smart has just 4.3 assists in his career.

“I like Marcus Smart as a player, but not as a point guard.” He believes he is the greatest point guard in the league; he isn’t, but he is still a good influence,” Cousy remarked.

Overall, the Holy Cross product believes the Celtics should be far better than they have been this season.

“It doesn’t seem like flag No. 18 will be up any time soon,” he continued.

In reality, Boston is in desperate need of a genuine point guard.

Cousy is true in claiming that the Celtics are without a guy who can put teammates in advantageous situations, since Boston has no player averaging 5.5 assists per game or more this season. In order for the club to succeed, a guy who can handle the ball and pass it to Tatum and Brown in crunch time is essential.

Following Cousy’s suggestions, the Cs were able to turn things around. On Jan. 8, they defeated the Knicks by 24 points, although the Knicks have been struggling as well. If Boston hopes to climb the Eastern Conference rankings, it still has a lot of work to do.

The Celtics will continue to be the most disappointing team in basketball until they do so.
