Scottie Barnes is a character in the film Scottie Barnes, a 20-year-old guard, faced up against LeBron James on Friday night. It might easily have frightened the Rookie of the Year contender, who was playing college ball for Florida State at the time. Barnes, on the other hand, was playing any other game.

Against James and the Los Angeles Lakers, the Toronto Raptors rookie produced one of his most overpowering games of the season. While it wasn’t enough to win, it was a statement performance from one of the NBA’s most promising young players.

When asked what LeBron meant to him as a kid after the game, Barnes made an even bigger statement. In other words, he wasn’t nearly as enthusiastic as other players his age.

Against LeBron James and the Lakers, Scottie Barnes is a character in the film Scottie Barnes had a spectacular night.

Barnes is running out of time to make his case for ROTY with with 12 games remaining on the calendar. However, a couple more performances like the one we witnessed on Friday will do nothing to help his cause.

On 14-of-21 shooting, the 6-foot-9 big set a career best with 31 points. In Toronto’s 128-123 overtime defeat to LA, he had a game-high 17 rebounds to go along with his six assists.

Barnes had a strong start to either half. In the first and third quarters, the fourth selection from last year’s draft scored 10 and 12 points, respectively. However, the rookie’s efforts were unable to defeat LeBron, who ended with a game-high 36 points.

Friday’s competition was again another example of what the gifted youngster is rapidly growing used to. Barnes, a one-and-done freshman who comes off the bench for the Seminoles, has averaged 20.3 points, 9.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 1.8 steals in his previous 11 games. He has 15.5 points and 7.7 rebounds per game this season, which places him third among all rookies.

When asked what LeBron meant to him, Barnes was brutally honest.

Every new generation of NBA players idolizes the legends who have come before them. As a result, many of today’s best young players grew up idolizing LeBron James before becoming his peers.

Barnes, on the other hand, isn’t one of those players.

Barnes was asked what LeBron meant to him as a child before he joined the NBA after his career night against LeBron’s Lakers. The 20-year-old then responded in a way that few would anticipate from a person his age.

“I used to be a huge Kobe [Bryant] fan. So they were essentially adversaries and such.”

In Barnes’ defense, he didn’t go on to praise the Black Mamba for the following several minutes. Despite this, the youngster recognized what the 37-year-old King has achieved in his 19-year career.

“LeBron has contributed so much to this game,” Barnes said. “Of course, he’s a Hall of Famer [and] someone who has paved the path for so many individuals in this game….” As a result, he had a lot of influence on a lot of young people like myself.”

Barnes’ game resembles LeBron’s way more than Kobe’s.

Barnes must have stayed up late to see Kobe’s Lakers beat LeBron’s Cleveland Cavaliers or Miami Heat as a resident of West Palm Beach, FL. On the basketball floor, though, the 6-9 forward resembles James much more.

Despite his larger stature, Barnes has mostly been used as a “point forward,” carrying the ball up the floor and functioning as a top facilitator. Since his entry into the league in the autumn of 2003, James, who is also 6-foot-9, has played this position.

Bryant, on the other hand, was always a shoot-first player. He was the quintessential two-guard, always threatening to hammer opponents for 30 points every night. James may only score 25 or 26 points, but he’ll also grab eight rebounds and dish out seven assists. Barnes, although demonstrating his scoring ability on Friday, clearly belongs in the latter group.

The trajectory of Barnes’ career in Toronto will be intriguing to watch. Perhaps one day he’ll be a basketball hero for a new generation of players to admire… or, in some instances, despise.
