In the NBA and NFL you hear a lot of “I’m a complete player” or “I’m a complete team.” What does it really mean?

“I feel like I’m a complete person”

There has never been an athlete like Bo Jackson. While other superstars like Deion Sanders have made a name for themselves in football and baseball, they have not done so with the pomp and circumstance of Jackson. But if you ask a retired NFL or MLB player what his main accomplishment is, he’ll tell you it’s the academy, not the sport. There Jackson kept his promise to the most important person in his life: his mother.

The incredible sports career of Bo Jackson

Bo Jackson blurred the lines between athletes, celebrities and brands in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Jackson was a superstar in football and baseball and chose both, while many others in his position had to choose one or the other. But there was something different about Jackson. The Kansas City Royals selected Jackson in the fourth round of the 1986 draft after his career at Auburn in which he won the Heisman Trophy. So he had more impact than the average athlete.

The Orlando Sentinel notes that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers picked Jackson first, despite his insistence that they did not. The question arose in the context of the team’s visit to Auburn, which it said was sanctioned by the NCAA. As a result, he missed the second half of the season due to the offense. The Buccaneers thought he was bluffing and picked him anyway. Jackson has decided to play for the Kansas City Royals.

Jackson was a man of his word. After refusing to sign with the Buccaneers, he was traded by the Los Angeles Raiders as the 183rd pick. He was drafted second because he feared his career in the MLB would get in the way of his football career. That’s not the case. Jackson was a superstar in both sports, played in All-Star tournaments, was the MVP and had numerous endorsement deals.

Ironically, Jackson’s football career is perhaps what he is best known for. But that lasted only four seasons when a hip injury forced him to retire in 1990. He played for the California Angels in 1994 before injuries caught up with him in baseball as well.

Bo Jackson returns to college

Jackson was just six credits away from graduation when he left school to pursue a professional sports career. But when his professional athletics career was over, he went back to school to get his degree. Yes, it would help him in his professional life outside of football, but it also had a special meaning.

Jackson was one of 10 children from a poor family in Alabama. Despite all his athletic accomplishments, Jackson’s academic career is something his mother would have been proud of. Jackson’s mother died just as his professional career was coming to an end. According to a 1995 New York Times report, the last promise he made to her was that she would finish her education.

It’s the last piece of the puzzle that makes me feel like a complete person, he told the paper.

Jackson was the first of his siblings to receive a four-year education. He has a degree in Family and Child Development. After retiring from Major League Baseball, he took the usual academic procedures and correspondence courses. His wife Linda supported him in pursuing this degree, which was a fantastic conclusion to a great career.

There never was another Bo Jackson

Two-sport athletes are not what they used to be. Yes, Tim Tebow technically tested the water. He never became a starter, however, and despite his recent return to the NFL as a tight end, his first stint with the team was just one season of dominance, followed by a couple more relatively lesser seasons. That’s what sets Beau Jackson apart.

He had the talent of Sanders and the mental capacity of a famous academic. Although Jackson’s career was relatively short, he is still adored by sports fans. So it’s easy to see why his name is still relevant 25 years after his last professional game.
