I have never met Deandre Ayton, but I have seen him play on a few occasions. From what I’ve seen, Ayton seems like a solid guy who’s capable of contributing to a winning team. However, I have some reservations about how much Ayton can contribute right away. The Suns already have Clint Capela, Tyson Chandler, and Alex Len, and they’re all proven players. In his rookie year, Ayton looked like he was going to be a high-level contributor on a contender, which is why his name was included in trade rumors before the season. However, after playing in the G-League last season, Ayton experienced a setback that forced him to sit out the first half of the 2018-2019 season
After completing his collegiate career at Arizona State, Deandre Ayton took an official visit to Phoenix and committed to the Suns. Ayton is frequently described as a “freak athlete” and, at 21 years old, he is already one of the best big men in the NBA. While the Suns would like him to sit for 2-3 years, Ayton is likely to be ready to play come draft day 2020.

Before he went to the NBA, Ayton was one of the best players in the country on Arizona’s team. He averaged 20.1 points, 11.6 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game and earned consensus All-American honors in 2017-18. He was also the Pac-12 Player of the Year this season.
Ayton’s play led to him staying in Arizona, where he also attended high school, as the Suns selected him with the No. 1 pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. At the time of selection, Ayton was only 19 years old. Her birthday’s on the 23rd. July 1998.
So Eaton made it to the 2020-21 regular season at age 22, and he’ll be 23 the day after a possible Game 7 of the 2021 NBA Finals if the series lasts that long.

Ayton has certainly justified his choice as the first pick in his NBA career. In his first season, he averaged 16.3 points and 10.3 rebounds, earning Rookie of the Year honors.
He missed time in 2019-20 when an ankle injury limited him to just 38 games, but he was excellent when he was on the court, averaging 18.2 points and 11.5 rebounds.
However, Ayton has been largely responsible for the Suns being one of the best teams in the league in 2020-21. Phoenix went from 19-63 in Ayton’s rookie season to 34-39 in 2019-20, and then 51-21 in 2020-21. His numbers dropped slightly in 2020-21, averaging 14.4 points and 10.5 rebounds in the regular season, but Ayton shot 62.6 percent from beyond the arc. He also has a plus/minus of 0.9, which is first in the league.
But Ayton ended up being even better for the Suns during their run to the NBA Finals in the postseason. In his first three rounds, he averaged 16.2 points per game and 11.8 rebounds while shooting 70.6 percent from the field. In addition, Ayton recorded a plus/minus of 3.2 in those postseason rounds and scored the decisive dunk in Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals.
Deandre Ayton is only 22 years old, but has already proven to be one of the best players in the NBA under the age of 25, and that is also a trend that the Suns seem to be following.

Ayton isn’t the only Suns star who is 27 or younger. Outside of future point guard Chris Paul and forward Jay Crowder, the rest of the Suns’ core is pretty young.

Of all the above players, only Payne is still under contract with Phoenix until next season. If the Suns can retain this core, they have a chance to compete for NBA titles in the coming years.
