The Heat’s roster has often been a shell of what it might have been. In a loaded Eastern Conference, players like Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo have been absent for long stretches, leaving inexperienced teammates to fend for themselves. Miami, on the other hand, has managed to stay afloat. It has, in fact, flourished.

The Heat began the autumn of 2021 with a strong roster ready to contend, two seasons after reaching the NBA Finals. Unfortunately, they haven’t watched it all at the same time.
No player has appeared in each of Miami’s 41 games. Duncan Robinson has the most appearances with 38, followed by Kyle Lowry, who has 37. Tyler Herro and P.J. Tucker, along with the rest of the club, have missed six games or more.
None of Miami’s losses have been more significant than those of Adebayo and Butler. To begin, the All-Star center appeared in 18 games before needing thumb surgery in early December. Butler has been out for the most of the previous six weeks due to tailbone and ankle ailments. The five-time All-Star has appeared in only 23 games this season, meaning he and Adebayo have combined to miss a total of 41 games.
Furthermore, after getting struck from behind by Nikola Jokic on November 8, Markieff Morris has yet to play. He’s also in health and safety procedures, which Lowry, Tucker, and Gabe Vincent previously filled.
Miami’s depth is assisting them in remaining competitive.

For most teams, losing two of their greatest players would effectively kill whatever postseason ambitions they had. The Heat, on the other hand, are not like most teams.
Miami is just 2.0 games behind the one-seed Chicago Bulls with a squad that has seen 19 players receive some sort of on-court experience. It’s also tied with the Brooklyn Nets, who have seen both Kevin Durant and James Harden play 35 games despite their own coronavirus difficulties. So, how do they go about accomplishing it?
Development. The next guy is up. Rinse, wash, and repeat.
Take, for example, Max Strus. Before signing a two-way deal with Miami in 2020, the 25-year-old has two games of NBA experience with the Bulls. Strus has gone from being a borderline NBA player to averaging 11.5 points per game and shooting 42.0 percent from three-point range.
Omer Yurtseven, how about him? While Adebayo heals, the rookie center was picked up by Miami last year and is giving immediate relief. Yurtseven has averaged 12.1 points and 14.6 rebounds since joining the starting lineup on December 26.
Caleb Martin is another player who signed a two-way contract with Miami in September. Martin averaged 5.3 points on 39.1 percent shooting in two seasons with the Charlotte Hornets. He’s averaging 9.2 points per game and shooting 50.5 percent from the floor for Miami. He, too, has found his groove since joining the lineup, scoring in double digits in six of his past seven games and 12 of his last 14 overall.
In a nutshell, the Heat get the most out of their players.

Miami’s roster’s success is a credit to president Pat Riley and coach Erik Spoelstra, among others. After all, how many other teams can really expect to win the conference while playing Strus and Yurtseven every night?
The Heat are still sixth in offensive rating and eighth in defensive rating despite their jumbled lineup. They are the NBA’s second-best 3-point shooting team, connecting on 37.6% of their long-range tries. They also have the fifth-largest average margin of victory.
Consider what will happen when Butler and Adebayo return.
Miami is now a top-three club in the Eastern Conference. Adding an experienced superstar like Butler and a powerful big man like Adebayo to the mix will help them even more. As a consequence of the Yurtsevens and Martins of the world being pushed to the bench, Miami’s depth will be almost tough to match once everyone is fit.
The Miami Heat should be included in any discussion of the NBA’s finest teams.
