The 2018 NBA Draft was supposed to be a giant success for the Houston Rockets. In a shocking turn of events, the Rockets selected University of Arizona point guard Trae Young with the fourth pick. After that, General Manager Daryl Morey traded down with the Atlanta Hawks and selected former Vanderbilt guard Kevin Knox. The Rockets now have two of the five best players in the draft.
In Thursday’s NBA Draft, the Houston Rockets selected 6′ 9″ small forward Kyle Wiltjer from Gonzaga University in the second round with the 42nd overall pick. Wiltjer is a skilled, but undersized player who averaged 17.4 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game. However, he only shot 37.9% from the field, but was a very efficient mark at 73.6% from the free throw line.
When the Houston Rockets were about to make their choice of the No. 25 pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, the Indiana Pacers made a trade with the Brooklyn Nets to move down eight slots. But, the Rockets felt that they had a good chance of trading for the No. 10 pick in the draft. As it turned out, they pulled off a fantastic trade, as the Nets sent them the No. 25 pick, which was the draft’s first selection, and the No. 32 pick, which was the second selection.. The 2021 NBA Draft began with Oklahoma State’s Cade Cunningham at No. 1 and concluded with Panathinaikos’ Georgios Kalaitzakis at No. 60. In the meantime, the Houston Rockets acquired four first-round choices, making them one of the night’s biggest winners.
The Rockets, on the other hand, continued to work on constructing their squad in the post-James Harden era after the draft concluded. The club signed one of the top undrafted free agents to a two-way deal, gaining a guy who may assist them next season as well as one of the draft’s best steals.

At No. 2 overall in the 2021 NBA Draft, the Houston Rockets selected a potential franchise-changing center. Jalen Green, a prep standout who spent a season with the NBA’s G League Ignite, can be a go-to scorer right away in the league. He has the athleticism and innate ability to put the ball in the hoop necessary to create a championship team around him.
After seventeen selections, the Rockets were able to halt Turkish Super League MVP Alperen Sengun’s slump. The old-school big man may not look or play like Deandre Ayton, but like Luka Doncic before him, he dominated Europe at the age of 18. He also has the offensive potential to grow into a Nikola Jokic-style big man in the future.
The Rockets also took the 23rd and 24th picks. They started with Usman Garuba, a Spanish winger who already had an outstanding record with Real Madrid and the Spanish National Team. He might be what Green is on the offensive side of the ball when it comes to defense. Josh Christopher of Arizona State was chosen at No. 24 by Houston. He’s a 19-year-old prospect with future 3-and-D guard potential.
This group is one of, if not the greatest, overall draft hauls in the year 2021.
Matthew Hurt of Duke was signed as an undrafted free agent by Houston.

The Rockets sat out Round Two after collecting four first-round picks. However, once the procedures were over, Houston general manager Rafael Stone went back to work and landed another huge catch.
As an undrafted free agent, Duke’s Matthew Hurt was a big coup for the Rockets. The 6-foot-9 forward is a three-dimensional scorer who can score from inside, midrange, and beyond the arc. Hurt shot 55.6 percent from the field, 72.4 percent from the line, and 44.4 percent from 3-point range in his sophomore season in Durham.
After standout freshman Jalen Johnson left the team halfway through the season, he led a below-average Duke squad to a better-than-deserved 13-11 record. Hurt became the only consistent scorer without Johnson, averaging 18.3 points per game despite being the primary target of the other team’s defense.
Hurt still has a long way to go before he can be considered an NBA-caliber defender. With the Rockets’ uber-athletic Green, Garuba, and Christopher, as well as tough defenders Christian Wood and Jae’Sean Tate, the former Blue Devil’s lack of defense shouldn’t be a problem.
In 2021, the Rockets should have an intriguing squad.
Before the 2021 draft, Houston already had some young, intriguing talent in place. With the tanking Rockets in 2021, Wood and Tate were two underappreciated guys who exploded when given the opportunity to play starter minutes.
Kevin Porter Jr., who notoriously flamed out after only one season in Cleveland, resurrected his career in Houston. Last season, the brilliant but troubled Porter Jr. averaged 16.6 points and 6.3 assists per game, including a 50-point performance against the eventual NBA champions, the Milwaukee Bucks.
Veteran players John Wall and Eric Gordon, as well as last year’s first-round selection Kenyon Martin Jr., remain on the roster. The club also signed veteran center Daniel Theis on the opening night of NBA free agency.
If nothing else, this group of guys should make for an entertaining season in Houston. Green’s ability to be a star straight immediately determines the majority of the team’s chances of success. If he can, the guys Houston selected and Hurts will be ideal complements for this rising star, and Houston will be able to bounce back from the Harden disaster sooner than anticipated.

The Houston Rockets have selected DeAndre’ Bembry with the 45th pick in the NBA Draft. Bembry is a 6’6″ swingman out of St. Joseph, who played for the St. Joseph’s Hawks. Bembry was an athletic wing who was a solid two-way player in college. He was listed at 6’6″ and 220 pounds, and he ran the 40-yard dash in just under four seconds.
