The “roles of an equipment manager in football” is a job that is not well-known. This person’s main responsibility is to manage the team’s equipment. The most common role would be an assistant coach or head coach.

'He Started Off as Being the Equipment Manager'

Scottie Pippen grew up in Hamburg, Arkansas, in a poor family. His father and one of his brothers were both in wheelchairs, and he had 11 siblings. Pippen’s father had a stroke, and his younger brother was disabled following an accident in gym class.

Basketball allowed Pippen to get out of the home and away from the stress he was experiencing. Pippen’s boyhood idol was Julius Erving, and he always felt that he would make it to the NBA one day, even if his family and closest buddy didn’t.

When Scottie Pippen declared he wanted to be an NBA player, his closest buddy didn’t believe him.

Ronnie Martin, Pippen’s boyhood pal, stated in Episode 2 of ESPN’s The Last Dance docuseries that he didn’t take Pippen seriously when the swingman assured him he’d be in the NBA one day. Martin can’t be blamed for thinking that way. After all, Pippen began his professional career as an equipment manager at the University of Central Arkansas, a school that had produced no NBA players before to him.

Martin remarked, “He always thought he was going to make it to the NBA.” [Jason Hehir, director] “And you believed him?” says the narrator. “Not at all,” says Martin. Scottie came to UCA as the equipment manager, but he was also practicing and doing all of the things that a team leader should be doing.”

A couple basketball players lost their scholarships because they weren’t performing well in school. Pippen was tenacious in his requests for a scholarship from the head coach, and he ultimately received one.

Pippen grew two inches in his first season and was given an opportunity to play by UCA head coach Don Dyer. Pippen had grown to 6-foot-6 by the start of his second year and had established himself as one of the top players in college basketball. As a senior, he averaged 23.6 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 4.3 assists, and he declared for the 1987 NBA Draft. After that, the rest is history.

Scottie Pippen was the fifth overall selection in the NBA Draft in 1987.

Pippen was selected fifth overall in the 1987 NBA draft by the Seattle SuperSonics. In exchange for Olden Polynice and two future draft selections, they traded him to the Chicago Bulls.

As a rookie, Pippen averaged 7.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists. In 1987-88, the Bulls won 50 games and beat the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round of the playoffs, led by Michael Jordan. However, the Chicago Bulls were defeated in five games by the Detroit Pistons in the second round.

Pippen’s first NBA coach was Doug Collins. Jordan said in his biography, Unguarded, that he disliked playing under Collins, who customized his offense to Jordan. After the 1988-89 season, the Bulls dismissed Collins and replaced him with Phil Jackson, who implemented the triangle offense.

In the triangle offense, Pippen blossomed. In Jackson’s first season as coach, he not only made his first All-Star team, but he also earned Jordan’s confidence, who needed a partner in crime to go to the promised land.

After mastering the triangle, Michael Jordan and Pip dominated the NBA.

After learning the triangle offense, Jordan and Pippen became an unstoppable combo. During the 1990s, the Bulls won six titles and three-peated twice while going unbeaten in the Finals.

From 1989-1990 through 1997-98, Pippen was a member of the triangle offense. During that time, he averaged 19.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 5.9 assists per game, and he was named to seven All-Star teams. Jordan would not have won six rings if Pippen, one of the finest two-way players in NBA history, hadn’t earned all six Finals MVPs with the Bulls. After all, before Pippen arrived in Chicago, Jordan had never advanced beyond the first round of the playoffs.

Pippen spent one season with the Houston Rockets and four with the Portland Trail Blazers after the Bulls’ dynasty ended in 1998, before returning to Chicago for a 23-game run in 2003-04. The six-time champion averaged 16.1 points, 6.4 rebounds, 5.2 assists, and 2.0 steals throughout his career. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010, and he is the first player in NBA history to win both an NBA title and an Olympic gold medal in the same year.

Basketball Reference provided the statistics.
