The Lakers are in trouble this season, and Magic Johnson is baffled by the team’s embarrassing performance. This year he has been vocal about his opinion that it will take a miracle for them to turn things around on the court, which likely means another change at head coach next season.
Magic Johnson is a Hall of Famer and former NBA player. He was baffled by the Lakers’ embarrassing season. In an interview with ESPN, he said that “It’s been very disappointing.”
Many people, including Magic Johnson, had high hopes for the Los Angeles Lakers heading into the 2021 NBA season. In the first round of the Western Conference Playoffs in 2020, Frank Vogel’s team was eliminated by the Phoenix Suns. LA is now in serious risk of missing the playoffs outright, two years after winning the “Bubble Championship.”
What went wrong with the Lakers? Russell Westbrook, Carmelo Anthony, and Malik Monk were among the newcomers brought in by Rob Pelinka and the front management. Unfortunately, the current lineup has not gelled well, as seen by the team’s 31-47 record.
Magic Johnson can’t seem to get his mind around the Lakers’ poor play, and he thinks it’s time for someone to accept responsibility.

Magic Johnson may or may not be the greatest LA Laker of all time, depending on who you ask. Within the organization, his name has weight, and his opinion is valued. He doesn’t have many good things to say about this year’s squad, unfortunately.
Throughout the 2021 season, LeBron James and his teammates have battled. They are currently in 11th position in the Western Conference with a 31-47 record. If the playoffs began today, LA would be eliminated.
Johnson is dissatisfied with his cherished franchise’s performance. He discussed what went wrong for the Lakers during a recent interview on ESPN’s First Take.
“Accountability is a significant issue here,” Johnson remarked. “Throughout the season, the Lakers have refused to accept responsibility. Whether it’s individual play, defensive play, or team play, it’s all important. My issue is with all of their justifications. Once again, we’re creating excuses. Make no more excuses. This did not turn out to be a good idea. “The components were not compatible.”
Johnson is also baffled as to how a team with four potential Hall of Famers in LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Russell Westbrook, and Carmelo Anthony can lose so many tight games.
“This is the first time I’ve ever seen a Lakers team lose so many tight games in the fourth quarter.” We were unable to triumph. So you’re saying we can’t win tight games? That irritates me.”
Next year, the Hall of Famer feels the same core will be in Los Angeles.

LeBron James was instrumental in the Lakers’ acquisition of Russell Westbrook. In return for Kyle Kuzma, Montrezl Harrell, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and a 2021 first-round selection, the front office received Russell Westbrook and two draft picks from the Washington Wizards.
To get Westbrook, the Lakers had to give up a lot. He hasn’t looked like an All-Star, much alone an MVP, as he has battled to find his footing.
Many are predicting that the Lakers would trade Westbrook in the summer, but Magic Johnson maintains that is not the case.
“Stephen A., they’re bringing the same squad back,” Johnson said. “It won’t be the same nine role players, but the key three [James, Davis, and Westbrook] will almost certainly have to return.” Because you can’t deal Westbrook without a first-round selection attached. You simply cannot do so since we no longer have any first-round choices.”
The 12-time All-Star feels the Big 3 must figure out a way to make it work at least until 2022. That begins with a successful finish to the season and, ideally, a spot in the Play-In Tournament.
What are the most probable changes to occur over the offseason?
Given LA’s troubles during the 2021 season, it’s reasonable to assume Rob Pelinka and Jeanie Buss will be seeking to make substantial changes for the following season.
Magic Johnson believes the Lakers will not be able to afford to split ways with Russell Westbrook after this season, but it is feasible. The former MVP has improved in recent games, but he’s been underwhelming for the most of the season. He’s averaging 18.4 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 7.1 assists per game, but his shooting has been inconsistent.
Let’s say the Lakers decide to retain Westbrook. In such instance, the front office will have to determine which role players to remain and who to replace with better matches. Outside of Malik Monk, Carmelo Anthony, Austin Reaves, and Talen Horton-Tucker, making a case for any of the other names to continue is tough.
Regardless of how the season ends, Frank Vogel looks to be on his way out as the head coach.
“It’s not all on Frank Vogel,” Johnson said. “However, we all know he’ll be dismissed.” Someone has to accept responsibility for this shambles. It’s a shambles. So you can bet Vogel will shoulder part of the responsibility. They’ll point their fingers at him.”
Vogel seems to be the wrong coach for the position. However, as Magic Johnson said, the players must accept responsibility for their actions since their reputation is on the line.
