Fox Sports commentator Gus Johnson attended this week’s Steelers-Bengals game in Cincinnati and when one of the Bengals was hit by two defenders he threw a punch. Johnson has been suspended for his actions, but at least now we know that even if you’re not playing or watching sports, it can be thrilling to watch someone get punched.
Gus Johnson is a well-known sportscaster for Fox Sports. He has been in the news recently for punching another hole in the NFL 2-deep at Fox Sports.
Gus Johnson is acting more like a mid-semester college student than a sports media star. By moonlighting on some NBA coverage for Turner Sports this spring, the play-by-play announcer is saving beer and pizza money for the rest of the year. That’s because once Labor Day approaches, he’ll be buried in literature.
Johnson, on the other hand, will be returning to school in the autumn.

Gus Johnson, a multi-sport scholastic standout in Detroit, went on to play baseball at Howard University, where he received a political science degree.
Johnson is now enrolled in Harvard’s Advanced Leadership Initiative program, three decades later. The program assists class participants, who are senior executives with at least 20 years of experience, in establishing a social impact plan focusing on their chosen subject.
After the announcer showed an interest in performing some college-level academic work, Johnson was suggested to the program by Harvard men’s basketball coach Tommy Amaker, according to writer and podcast host Richard Deitsch.
The Fox Sports executive recognized that Johnson’s announcing workload would have to be reduced as a result of the schedule, but he nevertheless supported Johnson’s decision to enroll in the Harvard program.
According to Awful Announcing, Johnson added, “Eric Shanks is a guy who is all about progress.” “It was because of him that I was offered this position at Turner.” I asked if I could do it, and he said yes because he believed it would be beneficial to Fox and he knew it would be beneficial to me.
“That’s one of the reasons I’d never quit Fox for the remainder of my career if I had my way.”

Gus Johnson, the network’s veteran play-by-play announcer, has withdrawn from consideration for the network’s NFL broadcasts this fall due to the time commitment needed by Harvard’s Advanced Leadership Initiative program. He does wish to keep his Saturday college football responsibilities to remain active, despite the Fox Sports schedule does not include Harvard-Yale or Cornell-Columbia.
Johnson stated, “My lessons are on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.” “So, I’ll probably have to call the college games on Saturday, and it’s a good thing they’re at noon, because I’ll be able to do the college games on Saturday and then get a flight back.” The travel and preparation work isn’t difficult at my age, but it is a lot of effort, so I’m definitely going to have to take a break from the NFL this year.”
If there was ever a year when he wanted to be a part of the network’s NFL coverage, this would be it. With Joe Buck and Troy Aikman leaving Fox to go for ESPN on Monday Night Football, the network must find a replacement for their top NFL team.
While play-by-play broadcasters and color commentators normally shift a few times each summer, losing the team at the top of the depth chart potentially propels everyone up. Kevin Burkhardt has already been named as Fox’s new play-by-play announcer for the top weekly games, which means Greg Olsen will likely stay as his analyst.
Johnson and his broadcast partner Aqib Talib, who made a mark in his first full season in the booth, would have risen at least one rung among the weekly crews, if not more, into some solid mid-level pairs.
At Harvard, he’s studying some rather esoteric topics.

The second semester of Gus Johnson’s Harvard fellowship begins in September, and he’ll be delving into topics far beyond whether Teddy Bridgewater followed the proper third-down progressions or whether Falcons coach Arthur Smith should have thrown the challenge flag on a scoreless first-quarter play.
Johnson stated, “We’ll look at racism, human rights, and mental health.” “We went over a lot of case studies. On a variety of topics, we hear from some truly outstanding professors. I teach a religious class on cosmic law and communal effervescence, and we discuss the drug issue.
“It’s been a fun ride so far, and I’m hoping to end strong.”
