Carson Wentz was on a lot of people’s radar coming into the NFL draft, but he surprised many when he fell to No. 2 overall and ended up with Philadelphia Eagles. The former QB is starting his second season in Philly for what could be an entire decade if things go well this year.

Carson Wentz was acquired by the Washington Commanders, much to the surprise of many. They traded two third-round selections and a second-round pick to the Indianapolis Colts for the 29-year-old quarterback and a 2022 second-round pick.
While the front staff didn’t make a big statement, it did what it believed was required to improve the quarterback situation. However, there is a stigma attached to the previous No. 2 overall choice. In 2017, Wentz appeared like a possible MVP contender, but he hasn’t been able to recapture that form. As a result, there are questions about his potential to succeed in Washington.

As a result of the Carson Wentz deal, he will play for the third time in seven NFL seasons. Before the 2021 season, the North Dakota State product signed a four-year, $128 million deal with the Indianapolis Colts. Despite having a successful season, an atrocious performance in the Week 18 defeat to the Jacksonville Jaguars obliterated any happy memories for the front staff.
Former Philadelphia Eagles president Joe Banner said that unraveling is nothing new for Wentz. Banner discussed the move and why the Commanders could regret obtaining the experienced signal-caller on The Rich Eisen Show recently.
“I believe there is enough proof at this time,” Banner added. “You’ve got two of the sharpest front offices in football, both of which were heavily engaged in this player and had to pay a significant price to no longer have him on their roster.” Every Sunday, you may view with your own eyes. I simply don’t see why you’d bet on that man to lead your team.”
Banner doesn’t believe Washington can compete with Carson Wentz as quarterback.
“I’m not sure how they’re going to win the division,” he continued. “Who did they believe they were bidding against, to the point where they had to pay that much in compensation and take on the whole contract?” I’ve been a harsh critic of the industry. Wentz is going to make some incredible plays. But after the 17 games are up, you’ll be unhappy with his performance.”
At quarterback, the 29-year-old should be an improvement.
The quarterback position for the Washington Commanders was a major concern heading into the 2022 offseason. Ryan Fitzpatrick began the season but was sidelined by a hip injury in Week 1 that ended his season. Taylor Heinicke did an excellent job filling in and had a few memorable moments. It was still impossible to see him as a franchise quarterback.
Carson Wentz, according to Washington’s management, has the potential to be that person. He’s showed signs of promise, but he hasn’t been able to bring it all together.
Wentz has a quarterback rating of 90.1 after throwing for 20,374 yards, 140 touchdowns, and 57 interceptions in six seasons. As a starter, the Raleigh, North Carolina native has a career record of 44-40-1.
Let’s not forget that throughout the 2017 season, Wentz was an MVP candidate. Unfortunately, after tearing his ACL that year, he hasn’t been the same player. Despite this, he has a lot of potential. For the 2021 season, Pro Football Focus awarded him a 70.9 rating.
Sure, in the Colts’ season finale, Wentz had an awful breakdown. He should, however, be an improvement over the players presently on the squad.
A bigger question is whether Carson Wentz can command respect in the locker room and lead the Commanders.

In 2021, Washington ended with a 7-10 record, good for third place in the NFC East. Ron Rivera’s team displayed grit and resilience in the midst of the season, going on a four-game winning run. Unfortunately, the club went on a four-game losing run after that.
Going into the 2022 season, the Commanders have some good components in place. The defense did not live up to the hype. With guys like Chase Young, Jonathan Allen, Montez Sweat, and Kendall Fuller, it still has the potential to be a top-10 team.
Offensively, Washington is likewise a work in progress. With 323.6 yards and 19.7 points per game, the squad was in the lowest half of the league. However, the Commanders have a number of excellent young weaponry. Terry McLaurin, Antonio Gibson, and Curtis Samuel all seem to have promise that has yet to be realized. It’s unknown if Carson Wentz will be able to unlock it.
Despite the fact that Wentz has talent, there’s a reason he’s been moved twice. While Washington intends to compete in 2022, it will be difficult until the former Eagles great improves his game.
