What picture comes to mind when you hear the name Jimmy Johnson?
If you don’t instantly think of NASCAR star Jimmie Johnson, the most memorable picture of Hall of Fame NFL coach Jerry Jones is probably in the locker room after a huge victory, wearing a very 90s Cowboys jacket, flawless hair a mess courtesy to giants stroking his head, saying, “How ’bout them Cowboys!”
Johnson is one of the most recognizable Dallas Cowboys players of all time. He’s also the coach of America’s Team, which is open to everyone under the age of 40.
However, you may be surprised to learn that his tenure in Dallas was not as lengthy or as fruitful as many people believe.
Johnson accepted a position given by his old college mate from Arkansas, Jerry Jones, after winning a national title with the Miami Hurricanes in 1987 and finished second to Notre Dame in 1988 (after the legendary Catholics vs. Convicts game).
Johnson’s first two years in Dallas were not very successful. The first year, the squad finished 1-15, while the second year, they went 7-9.
Johnson’s Cowboys grew up alongside Dallas’ “Triplets” (Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, and Michael Irvin). In 1991, the club ended 11-5, but the Detroit Lions beat them 38-6 in the playoffs.
Johnson’s impact was seen during the 1992 and 1993 seasons, when the team went 25-7 and won back-to-back Super Bowls.
Johnson and Jones have subsequently reconciled, although their feud resulted in Johnson’s resignation in 1994.
Johnson coached the Cowboys for just five seasons, finishing with a 44-36 record. His 55.0 percent winning rate was nothing near that of his predecessor Tom Landry (60.7 percent), successor Barry Switzer (62.5 percent), or even much-maligned Cowboys coaches Chan Gailey (56.3 percent) and Jason Garett (56.3 percent) (55.9 percent ).
Johnson had a better record as a coach with the Miami Dolphins (36-28, 56.3 percent ).
Despite the figures, Johnson remains one of the franchise’s most influential and popular coaches, which should make his comments on Dallas’ first-round playoff game in 2021 disconcerting to Cowboys fans.

Jimmy Johnson has been a regular of the FOX NFL Sunday pregame program since his final NFL game on Jan. 5, 2000, a 62-7 Divisional Round thrashing at the hands of Tom Coughlin and the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Johnson visited The Herd with Colin Cowherd this week to preview the NFL’s impending Super Wild Card Weekend as part of his now two-decade position as an analyst.
When the subject of Johnson’s previous club came up, he expressed his concern about the Dallas Cowboys’ first-round clash against the San Francisco 49ers:
I believe it is a difficult matchup as well. I’m aware that the Cowboys are the favorites. They’ve returned home. However, San Francisco seemed to be in excellent condition. They’re also a tough football squad. They have the ability to run the football. They have a great defense. Their defensive line is capable of overwhelming you. They have a strong football squad.

Despite praising Dallas’ opponent and pointing out the Cowboys’ inconsistency, Johnson said that “if the Cowboys play as good as they’re capable of playing, they can win the game.”

If you surveyed NFC teams before of the 2021 NFL Playoffs, you’d undoubtedly hear that the San Francisco 49ers are the club no one wants to play.
The Bay Area team finished 6-6 in Week 13 and has faced playoff-style elimination games almost every week thereafter. In response to these critical game situations, the club won four of its final five games to capture the NFC’s No. 6 slot.
The Cowboys have an opportunistic defense that bends but does not break. Despite ranking eighth in scoring defense, the team ranks 19th in total yards allowed. The 49ers’ No. 7 rushing attack and big-play weapons on offense in Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, and Elijah Mitchell might pose a challenge for Big D’s defense, which is ranked 17th in rushing yards allowed.
The good news for Dallas is that Niners quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has a history of throwing interceptions, which should have 2021 All-Pro CB Trevon Diggs salivating. In his previous five starts, the 49ers quarterback has three games with two interceptions.
Jimmy Johnson is correct on the attacking side. Although Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliott, CeeDee Lamb, and the rest of the offense may be frustratingly inconsistent at times, there are few in the NFL who can match them when they play to their full potential.
The Dallas Cowboys vs. San Francisco 49ers game (Sunday, 4:30 p.m. EST on CBS and Nickelodeon) is the game of the week in the first round, and it should be an exciting game whether Johnson is right or wrong to be anxious for his Cowboys.
