The day has come for the most highly scrutinized prospect in the entirety of Indian Football. And the country has not even been able to bask in the glory of the likes of Sachin, Tendulkar, Dhoni, or Sehwag. The world is now going to get to see the next big thing in Indian football and his name is Sahith Theegala.
Sahith Theegala is a 19-year old Sri Lankan who is currently ranked the number one youth squash player in the world. While he may be the best squash player on the planet, he is the first to admit that he is not the wealthiest. In fact, he was forced to get a job when he lost his parents as a result of the tsunami in Sri Lanka last year. Ever since then he has been spending all of his money on his training.Of the 156 golfers vying for the 2021 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, 23-year-old Sahith Tigala is clearly not the loudest name in the field. In fact, it’s likely that the vast majority of listeners have never even heard of it. But don’t get your hopes up. This guy knows how to do his best. It’s not even the first time Tigal has played in the U.S. Open, but it is the first time he has played a major championship as a professional, as he has only been paid to play golf for about a year, splitting his time between the Korn Ferry Tour and the PGA Tour. He had a very successful college career at Pepperdine, winning every major award imaginable in 2020, although his final season was unfortunately interrupted due to COVID-19. One of the few American golfers of Indian descent to have competed on the PGA Tour, the 6-foot-1 Californian is trying to make a name for himself in the professional ranks, with success so far.

He played four seasons on the Diamond Bar High School golf team and was selected to the All-Sierra League first team all four years, leading his team to the championship title each year. In addition to competing for her school team, Tigala also participated in the Toyota Tour Cup, a tournament open only to juniors, where they can hone their skills and compete against the best players in the region. Since its inception in 1999, the Toyota Tour Cup has produced future PGA Tour stars like Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantley, Matthew Wolff, Max Homa and Collin Morikawa, so we’re talking about the best players here. Tigala has nine wins on the tour and also won the 2014 Los Angeles City Championship, which is certainly no mean feat. He was also an excellent student in each of his four years of high school. In 2015, he graduated and went to Pepperdine where he was the top player in the country.
He played in his first U.S. Open as an amateur in 2017 and is a three-time Pepperdinechampion.
. In his first season at Pepperdine in 2015-16, Tigala was named West Coast Conference (WCC) Rookie of the Year and selected to the All-WCC First Team after posting perhaps the best freshman season in school history, with a GPA of 71.06. In the 2016/17 season, he finished in the top-10 five times, including his first career win, and was again selected to the All-WCC first team and earned third-team All-American honors. He qualified for the U.S. Open at Erin Hills this summer, but failed to qualify after rounds of 77 and 75. As a junior in 2017-18, Tigala led the Waves in batting average (70.86), picked up his second win, was named to the All-WCC first team for the third consecutive season and was again named a third team All-American. Unfortunately, he suffered a wrist injury in 2018 that forced him to miss the entire 2018-19 season as a sophomore. But he returned with renewed energy as a fifth-year senior and set a school record with a GPA of 69.04. He finished in the top 20 in each of the eight tournaments he has participated in and was first six times, including two wins. Tigala was named a first-team All-American and became the fifth player in history to receive Fred Haskins, Ben Hogan and Jack Nicklaus honors. Pepperdine was the best team in the country when the golf season was interrupted by COVID-19.
Teegala has not had a good start to his career, but has played well in 2021
. After finishing his college career, Tigala turned pro last spring and made his debut in the Outlaw Tour’s Lone Tree Classic in Chandler, Arizona, where he finished third for $1,850. He then took advantage of several sponsor exemptions and made his PGA Tour debut at the Travelers Championship, where he didn’t make the cut, which he did the following week at the Rocket Mortgage Classic and three weeks later at the 3M Open. But that was followed by weekends at the Barracuda Championship, where he finished 41st, and the 2020-21 Safeway Open, where he finished 14th. Tigala made his last start in 2020 when he missed the cut at the Sanderson Farms Championship. After a long hiatus, Tigala made his debut on the Korn Ferry Tour in March 2021, where he finished 19th. Since then, he has made five more starts in KFT and has crossed the finish line in all of them. His best result was a ninth place finish at the MGM Resorts Championship in Paiute. He returned to the PGA Tour to compete in the Charles Schwab Challenge, but did not make the cut. However, he recovered handsomely with a very respectable T-32 at the Memorial, before heading an hour south to Springfield Country Club for a 3-1 playoff victory and a spot in the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, where he hit his first stroke of the tournament Thursday morning. What makes Sahit Tigal’s young career so fascinating… Well, at least one of the things is the fact that he has scoliosis, a lateral curvature of the spine. Any back-related pathology is obviously not a good thing for a golfer, but Tigala has found a way to make it work. Although he is still looking for his first professional win, he is doing very well after one year of professional racing. Since his debut on the PGA Tour last summer, he has risen nearly 1,400 places on the Official World Golf Ranking and will continue to rise if he plays as well as he can.
