The Sacramento Kings and Philadelphia 76ers were loosely linked throughout the season in speculative trade speculation, but the two teams waited until the trade deadline to engage.
Sacramento and Philadelphia both made moves, but not in the same direction. Tyrese Haliburton, the Kings’ second-year guard, was traded to the Indiana Pacers in exchange for a deal focused on Domantas Sabonis. The Sixers made a big impact when they traded Ben Simmons to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for James Harden.

You might argue whether Daryl Morey got a large or little victory in the James Harden deal, but he did. He was able to get rid of a player who didn’t want to be on the club and replace him with one who is eager to help Philadelphia win a championship.
Before awarding a final grade on the trade, it’s important to evaluate the price and the huge “if” that Harden stays in Philly after this season, but for now, it’s fair to say Morey passed.
But it’s his active evaluation of the same value he gave up for Harden that gets it done. Morey recently claimed on the Colin Cowherd show that he offered two first-round draft selections to an unknown Western Conference club in exchange for a player said to be worth significantly less.
Just a few days later, Morey landed James Harden for a comparable deal. Morey made it seem in the conversation with Cowherd that Harden was a considerably more experienced and competent player than the man they had offered this deal for only a few days earlier.
“We couldn’t even acquire this guy for two firsts three days ago!” What is the point of arguing this? “Why are we discussing this?” According to Morey, a Sixers front office official remarked during the deadline.

Georges Niang is a French entrepreneur. shared a chat he had with Tyrese Haliburton when he was discovering he was being moved to Indiana on Duncan Robinson’s podcast The Long Shot. Prior to learning of his final destination, Niang said that Haliburton was suspicious that he would wind up in Philadelphia.
“I wake up in the hospital and Tyrese Haliburton FaceTimes me, saying, ‘Yo, I believe I’m being traded, do you hear anything?’ Is it true that I’m going to be traded to you guys?’
On a chat he had with Tyrese Haliburton, Georges Niang is a French entrepreneur.
Niang went on to discuss the human aspect of the trade deadline, as well as how quickly a player’s life can change.
“Like, this dude was talking to me about, ‘I think I’m getting traded to you guys,’ and then it’s Indiana, like, ‘I don’t know if it’s true,’ and then it happens, and now the kid has to go from California, where he probably never wore a winter jacket,’ to the Midwest, where he’s asking to be sponsored by Canada Goose.”

Let’s put some pieces together and connect some dots.
For starters, we know Morey was in talks with a Western Conference club only days before the Harden deal, allegedly offering a comparable package that included two first-round selections for a player who wasn’t as talented (or seemingly not as experienced) as Harden.
What is the name of the Western Conference team? Check.
Is there a player that isn’t as excellent as Harden? Check.
We also know, due to Niang, that Haliburton believed the deal was going to Philly.
Hmm…
Now, it’s possible Haliburton hadn’t heard Philly was engaged and just thought, based on the whispers during the season, that if he was moved, it would be to the Sixers. However, it’s possible that he was listening in on the team meetings.
Haliburton is a fantastic young athlete who earned All-First honors in his rookie season. For the most of the season, he was a contender for Rookie of the Year. However, he lacks the experience of Harden, a 10-time All-Star and MVP winner.
It’s all in order. Morey might have been bluffing and not really signed the documents on such a contract. One of the potential players is Haliburton.
What other players may have been the target of Morey’s big offer?

It may not be Haliburton, but given that no other Western Conference club made any substantial movements in the days leading up to the deadline when Morey claims this happened, Haliburton seems to be a viable possibility.
NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Adam Hermann endorsed Haliburton and made an excellent argument regarding the value the Kings received:
“Could it be Tyrese Haliburton and the Kings?” At this stage in the discussions, Haliburton was most likely still in Sacramento. If that’s the person Morey is referring to, the Kings are really doomed. It’s much worse to trade Haliburton and other players for Domantas Sabonis, Jeremy Lamb, Justin Holiday, and a second-round selection than it is to trade Ben Simmons and two first-round choices for Ben Simmons and two first-round picks. “It’s not even close,” says the narrator.

When you phrase it that that, it’s difficult to believe the Kings turned it down. However, Morey also said that this specific general manager was acting irrationally and didn’t want to interact with Morey or the Sixers. That’s one of the reasons Morey made such a ridiculous offer.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Donovan Mitchell were also named by Hermann as possible candidates.
Another guy to consider is Damian Lillard, but I’m not certain he’s a universal “must trade” for two first-round selections.
We’re unlikely to learn who the player of interest is, but it’s fascinating to consider what could have been in Philadelphia, and how the team lucked out and acquired Harden only days later.
