After being elected to replace Mike Budenholzer, who resigned to become the Milwaukee Bucks coach, Nate McMillan took over as the Atlanta Hawks interim head coach. He was previously an assistant coach with the Portland Trail Blazers.
The NBA regular season is underway, and the teams are getting ready for the upcoming post All-Star break. This is a time for teams to make some roster moves, with some big names being traded and some players being waived for salary cap or other reasons. One such player is Atlanta Hawks interim head coach Nate McMillan.
Nate McMillan was officially named the Atlanta Hawks’ interim head coach earlier today, after his first stint as the team’s acting head coach during the end of the season. Despite what some may think, Nate has not been a professional basketball player, but instead was a member of the Seattle Supersonics organization. Nate once played for the Seattle Supersonics, but was traded in 1993 to the Utah Jazz. He played for the Jazz from 1993 to 1994 and then again from 1997 to 1998. He suffered a career ending injury during the 1997 season. After the Jazz, McMillan attended the University of Oregon and played 10 games for the Oregon Ducks.. Atlanta Hawks interim coach Nate McMillan has used a controversial 2020-21 NBA season to his advantage. With LeBron James complaining everywhere and injuries sending many of the game’s stars to the bench, McMillan led a disappointing Hawks team through the middle of the season. Less than a year after parting ways with the Indiana Pacers, the veteran head coach put on one of his most impressive performances to date.

When the Hawks fired Lloyd Pierce midway through the 2020-21 season, the team had to persuade McMillan to step in as interim head coach. Frankly, you can’t blame the head coach, who turns 57 in early August, for being so cautious.
Although he enters the season with a career record of 661-588, he has already been scalped twice and perhaps unfairly dismissed. That includes the Pacers’ decision to fire McMillan in August 2020, just weeks after he signed a contract extension.
Since the Pacers didn’t qualify for the NBA Tournament and McMillan’s Hawks made it to the Eastern Conference Finals, they probably regretted their decision. It didn’t help that the Pacers fired Nate Bjorkgren after just one season at the helm.
McMillan is one of the best players in the history of the Seattle Supersonics
On this day in 1987, Nate McMillan of the Sonics set the team record and the NBA rookie record for assists in a game with 25.

Young fans are forgiven for not knowing that McMillan played in the NBA during the Michael Jordan era.
McMillan, who was selected in the second round of the 1986 NBA Draft, averaged 5.9 points, 4.0 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 1.9 steals in 796 games, all of which he played for the Seattle Supersonics. The former North Carolina State guard has proven to be an excellent backup point guard after Gary Payton.
In the 1993-94 season, he was averaging three steals per game, although he was only used in eight games that year. McMillan, a two-time All-Defensive honoree, averaged 5.0 points and 5.2 assists in 98 postseason games.
The Supersonics then retired his number 10 shirt. When the Sonics moved to Oklahoma City in 2008 and became the Thunder, they continued to keep McMillan’s jersey number and other cancelled numbers out of circulation.
Only a few current NBA coaches have played in theleague.
When McMillan took over the Hawks in February, he helped improve the club’s rapidly declining overall record.
At the time of McMillan’s promotion, there were only nine current NBA head coaches in the league. At least the former Sonics star brought the coaching staff from 32 to 10.
Nets head coach Steve Nash is one of those elite players and will be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a player. Steve Kerr of Golden State could join him at some point, though he’ll likely rejoin the team after leading the Warriors to three league titles.
Many of today’s NBA head coaches are longtime assistants who may have never played out of college. Among them is Thunder head coach Mark Dayno, who worked as a student manager for the Connecticut Huskies men’s basketball team from 2003 to 2007. Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins also played only intramural games at the University of Pennsylvania.
McMillan is one of the exceptions, and basketball fans can only hope he’s not the last of a dying breed. The league gets a little funnier when former players are forgotten and have to deal with today’s issues, from huge contracts to Kyrie Irving’s apology.

COMPARED TO: Tre Young was coached by Kobe Bryant before he played in an NBA gameNate has his detractors, who feel his success came from the system he played under, and not from actually being an NBA player. And they’d be right. But that’s not what I’m going to do. I’m not going to look at McMillan’s history as a player, instead I’m going to look at his career as an NBA coach..
