Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr is one of the NFL’s most exciting young talents. He’s started all 51 of his team’s games during his three-year career, and he’s currently on pace for 4,500 yards, 33 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions this season. As a result, the Raiders appear primed to compete deep into the postseason, and Carr has no plans of slowing down anytime soon.

So here we are, a week out from the Raiders’ second preseason game, and Derek Carr already has a couple things to work on. “I’m still just working through some things”, said Carr. “There are some mental things that are going to take some time to get me back to where I want to be.”

It’s a cliché by now, but Derek Carr feels like he’s on the verge of something special with the Oakland Raiders. That’s why, after the team drafted wide receiver Amari Cooper in the first round and signed Marshawn Lynch, the Raiders quarterback is both optimistic and impatient.. Derek Carr isn’t well-liked or disliked in the NFL. When compared to the other quarterbacks in the league, he is right in the middle. An *average* quarterback, one who is competent enough to keep a team in the playoff hunt year after year, but who will almost certainly never win a Super Bowl.

Despite the Raiders’ failure to make the playoffs the previous two seasons, Carr put up great numbers in the box score. In 2019, he passed for 4,054 yards and 21 touchdowns, while in 2020, he threw for 4,103 yards and 27 touchdowns.

Carr has thrown for over 4,000 yards in each of the last three seasons and hasn’t had a passer rating below 90.0 since 2017.

Carr is only 30 years old, so he still has plenty of NFL years ahead of him. However, like Tom Brady, the long-serving Raider has ambitions to play into his 40s.

Carr stated, “I feel like I’m 20.” “…that comes with a greater understanding of how to train, eat, and care for your body. And that costs a little money now and again, but it’s well worth it… But, with the way they rehab and stuff these days, I’m in terrific shape” (ESPN).

When discussing how he maintains his body healthy, Carr emphasizes the value of modern science and rehab, something that Tom Brady — the pioneer of playing past when you’re meant to — spends a lot of time advocating.

Tom Brady is the ideal player to model yourself after.

Brady is 44 years old and shows no signs of slowing down any time soon. He just had an outstanding 2020 season, throwing for 4,633 yards and 40 touchdowns. Brady hasn’t passed for that many yards since 2015, and he’s only thrown for more than 40 touchdowns once (2007).

Of course, Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are coming off a thrilling Super Bowl victory over Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, further cementing the league’s view that he has a few more elite years in him.

Brady has done an incredible job of remaining fit and in shape as he has gotten older, even playing with a partially torn MCL this past season. Brady is undoubtedly the player to look up to if Carr is serious about playing well into his thirties.

Carr could play well into his forties, but that doesn’t mean he’ll do so with the Raiders. They’ve long been reported to be seeking for a quarterback replacement.

Carr has yet to play in a postseason game (he missed one in 2016 due to injury), and head coach Jon Gruden has a reputation for being a quarterback aficionado. Gruden is one of the few people who is excited about the prospect of drafting and developing a new big-armed quarterback in the near future.

Carr’s chances in 2021 are slightly stacked against him. The AFC West is expected to be a strong competition, and the Raiders’ offensive line was shredded this offseason. If things don’t work out for Carr and the Raiders, don’t be surprised if the veteran quarterback is forced to find a new team to achieve his dream of playing into his thirties.
