Carolina Panthers are better prepared to handle Christian McCaffrey injury than in 2020.

The christian mccaffrey injury history is a Carolina Panthers player who has been injured in the past. In 2020, he had a knee injury that ended his season.

The Carolina Panthers’ season was cut short less than a year ago when All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey was placed on injured reserve with a high-ankle sprain after just two games. The Panthers had dropped to 3-5 and had no realistic chance of making the playoffs by the time McCaffrey returned in November.

While McCaffrey had a clean bill of health going into 2021, he has already had a significant setback. The Panthers’ running back sustained a hamstring injury in the second quarter of Thursday night’s game against the Houston Texans and did not return. He completed the game with 40 total yards from scrimmage on seven rushes and two catches.

It is unknown how long time McCaffrey will be out. However, the Panthers have done a better job of protecting themselves this year than they did in 2020 in the case of a prolonged absence without their star rushing back.

Mike Davis’ replacement is Chuba Hubbard.

Last season, the Panthers relied on veteran Mike Davis to lead the backfield rotation when McCaffrey was out for 13 games. Davis had a fairly forgettable career up to that time, having spent five years with four different clubs and averaged just 3.6 yards per run attempt.

As Carolina’s new main back, Davis didn’t exactly light the world on fire, but he did a respectable job. Given the condition of the offensive line, the Panthers ended the year with the No. 16 rushing offense according to Football Outsiders’ DVOA. Davis signed a multiyear deal with the Atlanta Falcons this summer, buoyed by his success.

In McCaffrey’s absence, the Panthers will go with a less experienced running back this time. Following McCaffrey’s departure, Chuba Hubbard, a fourth-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, got the most of the action on Thursday. The youngster rushed for 52 yards on 11 attempts (4.7 average) and caught three passes for another 27 yards. Hubbard’s flexibility is appealing in an offense that requires running backs to switch to receiving duties.

At quarterback, there is a higher ceiling.

With McCaffrey’s injury in 2020, the Panthers placed even more pressure on Teddy Bridgewater, the quarterback they had acquired in free agency earlier that year. Bridgewater had a high floor but lacked the potential to carry an attack without McCaffrey’s field-tilting ability.

The Panthers acquired Sam Darnold from the New York Jets in exchange for three draft choices in order to improve their quarterback. Despite the fact that Darnold had not lived up to his billing as the No. 3 overall selection, Carolina remained optimistic about his abilities and believed that, having been released from a tough situation in New York, he would flourish in a new environment.

It’s uncertain if Darnold can finally live up to expectations with the Panthers, but the early signs are encouraging. He’s improved in every key throwing statistic in three starts and established a new career high in running touchdowns (three). Darnold hasn’t played flawlessly — he’s thrown several interceptable throws that have gone incomplete — but he’s made significant strides in Carolina.

Christian McCaffrey may miss fewer games this season than he did last year.

McCaffrey’s comeback date has not been established by the Panthers, and soft-tissue ailments like strained hamstrings may take longer to heal. The fact that the club declared him out so soon after his injury on Thursday doesn’t speak good for a speedy comeback.

However, not all hamstring injuries require a lengthy recovery period. McCaffrey has never had hamstring problems, even when he was in college. Even if the Panthers put him on a pitch count when he returns, this opens the possibility for a faster comeback.

Panthers owner David Tepper promised he’d bring Cam Newton home ‘eventually,’ and the time has arrived.
