Al Michaels, the voice of Monday Night Football and longtime broadcaster for CBS Sports, is applying Drew Brees and Tom Brady’s teaching as he approaches the end of his own legendary career.

For NBC Sports play-by-play announcer Michaels, Al, the majority of the faces surrounding professional football have changed. Some people, such as Tom Brady of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, are content with the status quo.
Michaels, who turned 77 on Nov. 12, is reaching the conclusion of his stint as a Sunday Night Football analyst. However, whether it’s Brady or NBC teammate Drew Brees, the 2013 Pro Football Hall of Fame member is still attempting to learn from the younger generation and apply what he’s learned to his own life.

At least in terms of quarterbacks, the contemporary NFL has swiftly become an older man’s game. At 44 years old, Brady is still playing at an MVP level, Green Bay Packers star Aaron Rodgers (who turns 37 in December) has looked good when he isn’t spreading COVID-19 falsehoods, and Atlanta Falcons veteran Matt Ryan (36 years old) has had a comeback in 2021.
After the 2020 season, the NFL will lose Brees (who turns 43 in January) and Los Angeles Chargers great Philip Rivers (who ended his last season at 39 years old). It’s too early to say if Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will retire after this season. He turns 40 in March 2022.
Then there’s Michaels, who is still announcing Sunday Night Football in his late seventies. In an interview on the Sports Illustrated Media Podcast on Nov. 4, the broadcasting legend claimed he’d talked with Brady and Brees, both of whom have maintained high levels of performance as they’ve gotten older, about their own approach.
“When they’re towards the conclusion of their career, you know that the end is much closer than the beginning or even the middle, and I’m just drinking up as much pleasure as I can from this season.” I’d want to go to the end of the year and then see what happens.”

Michaels also expressed his gratitude for the chance he has at NBC Sports, saying that he is still “relishing” it. Despite the fact that his contract is set to end in February 2022, the experienced broadcaster has made no indication that he plans to retire.
At this point in his life, Michaels would be smart to keep channeling Brady.
We may watch an 83-year-old Michaels announce a 50-year-old Brady’s touchdown throw in 2027 if things keep going as they are. What would have seemed impossible a decade ago today seems to be totally attainable.
In the first eight games of the season, Brady completed 67.3 percent of his throws for 2,650 yards, 25 touchdowns, and five interceptions. With a 17-game schedule, it translates to 5,632 yards, 53 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. Remember that in his 21 seasons as a starter, he’s only thrown for over 5,000 yards once, a 5,235-yard performance in 2011, and has only thrown for at least 40 regular-season touchdowns twice.
Then there’s Michaels, who presided over two of Brady’s starts in the first four weeks of the 2021 season. He hasn’t lost any speed off his fastball in his late seventies, and he is still one of baseball’s most well-known current play-by-play announcers.
Despite continuing to play at a high level in his later seasons, Brees was restricted to just 23 of a potential 32 games from 2019 to 2020 due to ailments. If Michaels is fortunate, he’ll continue to attempt to imitate Brady, who hasn’t missed a game due to injury since 2008.
Brady, on the other hand, does not get to enjoy the load management that Michaels and Philadelphia 76ers big player Joel Embiid — who, by the way, is 27 — do on a regular basis.
Michaels, who is now 78 years old, is determined, like Brady, to keep going as long as he can.
You may still be wary of Michaels’ ability to call Brady’s games in six years. At the very least, we know that he will not retire after the 2021 season.
In 2022, Michaels is scheduled to join Amazon Prime as the play-by-play voice for Thursday Night Football. Joe Buck, who is presently the host of Fox Sports’ weekly program, is not likely to return after this season.
In terms of Michaels’ NBC job, it’s unclear if he’ll be back on Sunday Night Football in any capacity next season. Mike Tirico, a veteran Monday Night Football play-by-play announcer, has been named as Michaels’ successor by NBC.
Wait until 2027, when Brady throws his 800th career touchdown pass on Thursday Night Football, to feel old.
