Colin Cowherd of ESPN’s “The Herd” came under a lot of scrutiny this week for his ridiculous ranking of the “Top 10” NFL players. He made the list in part by ranking the best players in the league right now, and then ranking the best players ever. Cowherd’s list includes Aaron Rodgers, who is currently in the midst of a historic season, but who is still ranked sixth on the list when ranking the best players ever. The biggest argument in Cowherd’s defense is that he’s not comparing them to each other, he’s just ranking them on the list. Fair enough. But, ranking the best players ever is not a valid argument. The list is completely subjective, and his list is nothing

It has been 2 months since the 2017 NFL season ended and we are still waiting to see who will be the best quarterback in the NFL this year. We have already seen a quarterback win the NFL MVP award, so why are people still arguing about this? I mean, even Rodgers thinks he is better than most of the quarterbacks in the league right now.

For a few years now, ESPN’s Colin Cowherd has been using his radio show to rank NFL quarterbacks by how much they should get paid. To no one’s surprise, the Packers QB is often at the top of the list. Most recently, he made the case for why Rodgers would be at the top of his list for the 2017 season:. After winning his third NFL MVP award and nearly leading the Green Bay Packers to the Super Bowl last season, Aaron Rodgers showed he’s far from finished with his career. Indeed, his brilliant 2020 campaign was perhaps the best of his career, worthy of the Hall of Fame.

Despite being voted the most valuable player in the entire league, that apparently didn’t impress Colin Cowherd. Judging by the sports media’s ridiculous ranking of the best ten players in the NFL, Rodgers must feel shortchanged.

And he’s not the only established star who must feel let down by Cowherd.

Colin Cowherd places three quarterbacks in top 10 NFL players to date

If Cowherd’s goal with ranking the NFL’s top 10 players for the 2021 season was to create controversy, he certainly accomplished that goal.

On Thursday’s edition of The Herd , a sports radio host ranked the top 10 players in the league, and his results raised more than one question.

So who deserves first place?

Surprisingly, Cowherd did not put the quarterback at the top of his list. Instead, he chose three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald. With 85.5 sacks in his career, seven Pro Bowl nominations and six consecutive First-Team All-Pro selections, it’s no wonder the Los Angeles Rams linebacker was named Cowherd’s NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

The last two quarterbacks to win the Super Bowl. Tom Brady finished second and Patrick Mahomes finished third.

That’s not surprising.

Cowherd picked Russell Wilson fourth, which seems fair given his consistently high level of play, excellent longevity and big league status.

However, there is only one other quarterback on the roster. And judging by the way Cowherd judged him, Rogers should be pissed.

Aaron Rodgers must be offended by Cowherd’s ridiculousrating.

Despite being the reigning MVP, Rodgers is far from Cowherd’s number one pick. In fact, he’s not even the best player on his own team.

At least not according to Cowherd.

Although Rodgers was listed at No. 8, his best receiver Davante Adams found himself one spot above him. Cowherd defeated the Packers’ two stars, tight end Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs and wideout DeAndre Hopkins of the Arizona Cardinals.

We are talking about a serious miscalculation here.

Did Cowherd understand that Rodgers was directly responsible for Adams getting the ball? The Pro Bowl winner has tremendous talent, but it certainly helps to work with one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. Rodgers led the NFL in completion percentage, touchdowns, quarterback rating and QBR in 2020, so it doesn’t make sense to consider him the eighth-best -player until the 2021 season.

He should also be offended that Cowherd chose three technical players over him, because they don’t have the same impact on the game as the quarterback. Of course Kelce, Hopkins and Adams have made great strides in the passing game over the years. But Rodgers has been a top player for a while now, and he’s made it clear that he’s still a force to be reckoned with, throwing for 48 touchdowns in his 37-year season. At the very least, he should have been behind Wilson, who has zero MVP trophies at home.

Which NFL players not on the list are worthy of being named in the top 10?

Rodgers must feel slighted to be so low on Cowherd’s list. Still, some players must feel aggrieved for not making it to the qualifying round.

Cowherd added Indianapolis Colts defenseman Quenton Nelson at number 9 and Chicago Bears midfielder Khalil Mack at number 10. Both deserve to be mentioned in any conversation about the best players at their position, but they should not have been placed before other deserving stars.

Why not T.J. Watt instead of Mac? Last season, the Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker led the NFL in sacks (15), defensive snaps (41) and interceptions (23). At 26 years old, he seems capable of taking his game to the next level in the coming years.

Meanwhile, Mack hasn’t reached double digits since 2018. And at 30, his best days seem to be behind him.

Even Miles Garrett seems like a better choice for the 10th spot. To be more comfortable than Mack. The quarterback of the Cleveland Browns collected 12 sacks and 18 QBH in 14 games last season, and it looks like he’ll be even more dominant in 2021 with Jadeveon Clowney distracting the opponent’s offensive linemen.

And Nelson?

Yes, it’s absolutely wonderful. But is he one of the top 10 players in the league right now?

Given some of the big names that didn’t make the list, including Lamar Jackson, Derrick Henry, Alvin Kamara, Stephon Diggs and Tyreek Hill, it’s fair to wonder if Cowherd rated Nelson higher than the eight players for the 2021 season.

Fortunately for Aaron Rodgers, at least he didn’t get behind the defender.
