For 10 years, the Green Bay Packers have struggled to keep Brett Favre around. Over and over again, the Packers have tried to bring back the future Hall of Famer, but it’s been a constant struggle.

Aaron Rodgers has been under a microscope in Green Bay, Wisconsin, for years. After a breakout 2011 season, the quarterback’s play dropped off in 2012, and he was at the center of controversy over his contract extension, which was extended in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Aaron Rodgers gave an interview recently where he finally cleared the air about how he felt about the Packers bringing back Brett Favre. At the end of the day, there is no secret to bringing Favre back. The Packers are a small market team with few resources to do anything other than put together a younger, faster, faster, and faster team. The Packers front office has known that they were going to bring back Favre since 2012. They have known for years that they were not going to get any younger, and that they need to start the transition to a younger team as soon as possible. The Packers have known for years that their current quarterback is a long term injury risk, and that they had to start grooming a replacement for this.. Aaron Rodgers was successful in convincing the Green Bay Packers to re-sign Randall Cobb, a long-time buddy and reliable slot receiver. It didn’t take long, though, for whispers of another possible reunion between the club and a former big-name star to circulate.

Of course, Clay Matthews’ return to Green Bay isn’t something that just happened.

Rodgers finally cleared the air regarding pressing the Packers to bring back a franchise legend who should formally retire from the NFL, as rumors about the long-haired linebacker returning to the NFC North grew.

Aaron Rodgers clarifies his stance on the Packers’ decision to bring back a franchise legend.

Simply by utilizing social media, Rodgers, Cobb, and left tackle David Bakhtiari added to the drama in Green Bay. All three players seemed to make postings urging the Packers to re-sign Matthews, who played for the team from 2009 to 2018. Naturally, this prompted concerns about Rodgers’ ability to compel Brian Gutekunst to make another move on his behalf.

On Sunday, Green Bay’s general manager addressed the Matthews issue, which came as no surprise. The Packers have had no talks about bringing back the beloved linebacker, according to Gutekunst.

Rodgers’ power battle with the executive office has been well known, so it wouldn’t be surprising if he requested the Packers to add a familiar face to their defense. On Wednesday, though, the team’s reigning MVP finally clarified his position on bringing back the six-time Pro Bowler.

“I was with Dave (Bakhtiari) and his beautiful fiancée, Frankie, and the Cobbs on Friday night,” Rodgers said. “And we had a question regarding Clay, since Clay had just relocated from California. So we set up a FaceTime call with Clay. These discussions resulted in a social media post. There hasn’t been a huge push to sign him from any of us, I don’t believe.”

“We didn’t even discuss ball,” he continued. We were joking around with him. I’m having a nice discussion with someone. He’s now a large farmer, similar to Jordy. He certainly has the strength to play, but I don’t believe he’s considered football in a long time.”

Clay Matthews should retire from the NFL after more than a decade of putting his life on the line.

Rodgers thinks Matthews hasn’t thought about football in a long time, therefore it’s doubtful the 35-year-old would record another sack. While it was enjoyable for Packers supporters to fantasize about a reunion with the beloved linebacker, that fantasy is no longer a possibility.

Matthews used a mix of strength, speed, and power to beat offensive lines for years, making him a nightmare to block. He should be inducted into the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame for his relentless work ethic and ability to go after the quarterback.

His days as a great edge rusher, though, are long gone.

Matthews has 61 sacks from 2009 through 2014, but just 22.5 in his last four seasons with Green Bay. Although he had eight sacks with the Los Angeles Rams in 2019, he did so while lined up alongside Aaron Donald (12.5) and Dante Fowler (12.5), both of whom had double-digit sacks (11.5).

What was Matthews’ strategy for following up on the campaign?

In the year 2020, he did not play football.

The California native must now file his retirement papers and completely embrace the next chapter of his life. Furthermore, with Za’Darius Smith, Preston Smith, and Rashan Gary at outside linebacker, the Packers should be in excellent shape.

Ironically, although Matthews seems destined to never wear another Packers jersey, Rodgers may find himself in a new color scheme sooner rather than later.

Will Aaron Rodgers remain in Green Bay after the 2021 season?

Next spring, don’t be shocked if Tom Brady’s teammate follows in his footsteps.

Rodgers may be back for another season, but his future in Green Bay is definitely bleak. According to reports, the Packers have a verbal agreement in place to give their star quarterback his desire of seeking a new NFL home if he still wants to do so after the season.

Will Rodgers ask to be released?

It would be fascinating to watch whether he changes his mind if the Packers overcome their postseason problems and win the Lombardi Trophy. Perhaps a second Super Bowl ring would persuade him to stay in Green Bay beyond the 2021 season.

On the other hand, don’t be shocked if Aaron Rodgers uses a different collection of weapons in 2022 if the Packers leave the playoffs early again.

Of course, in a different city.
