In an article for GQ, Samuel talked about his hard life on the streets of Spartanburg, South Carolina. He lost a close friend to violence when he was only eleven years old. Although Samuel is a promising young player in the NFL, the same problems persist. He recalled that his cousin Amir was shot last year.
Growing up with his mother, who he said was picked off the street, Samuel moved in with his grandmother Kat. But after he finished high school, he found himself without a stable home. It was then that his stepmother, Precious, began to play a more active role in his life. Today, he believes it helped him gain the skills he needed to go to college and then to a professional club. Now that he’s making money in the NFL, Samuel wants to give something back to everyone who helped him along the way.

Samuel grew up with a mother who suffered from drug addiction and could have pushed her away because she belonged to the wrong clique. Instead, he used their difficulties as motivation to avoid falling into the same trap. Samuel helped her whenever he could.
Those were tough times, but I kept saying to myself: When I get to the NFL, I’m going to help my birth mother. When the time was right, I sent Felicia to rehab to get her back on track. When she stopped working there, I bought her a house. I got her back on her feet and now she is back, working in a normal restaurant and doing well. She’s doing what she’s supposed to do, the 49-year-old told GQ.
According to him, Precious and Felicia are now good friends. After she gets the help she needs, Felicia no longer blames her mother-in-law. If you ask Deebo, Samuel has two mothers and a deceased grandmother who have brought him to where he is today. Now he wants to pass it on. And he’s doing great in the NFL.
