The Kansas City Chiefs had a very impressive 2018 season, finishing with an 11-5 record and winning their first playoff game since 2012. The next year should be just as exciting, with the Chiefs looking to win another AFC West crown while contending in the playoffs once again.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ 2021 season ended in disappointment after a good regular season. However, some offseason tweaks and the publication of a new schedule will put Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid to the test.
The most significant change in Kansas City is, of course, Tyreek Hill’s departure. The expenses grew overwhelming as the quick receiver proved to be the ideal complement to Mahomes and Travis Kelce. The Chiefs had no choice but to swallow the bullet, look at the big picture, and move on with the six-time Pro Bowler demanding a hefty deal.
Instead of going big-game hunting, general manager Brett Veach decided to replace Hill by committee. Since coming in Kansas City, Mecole Hardman has been playing in the shadow of the Cheetah. He will supposedly take over as the team’s resident speedster. Marquez Valdes-Scantling can also go deep, and Mahomes has a huge target in JuJu Smith-Schuster.
After the celebrations, the Chiefs chose Western Michigan receiver Skyy Moore in the draft and signed Justyn Ross. They both have a lot of promise, but it’ll be interesting to see how they transition to the NFL.
Veach utilized seven draft selections on defensive players when it came to selecting. That degree of dedication isn’t unusual — consider how the general manager rebuilt the offensive line last summer — but it reveals the organization’s objectives. Kansas City knew it needed to better on the offensive side of the ball after seeing Joe Burrow tear it apart in the AFC championship game.
The decisions are mostly rational. Trent McDuffie replaces Charvarius Ward in the starting lineup immediately away. Kansas City’s pass rush evaporated anytime Frank Clark and Chris Jones weren’t on the field together, so George Karlaftis will assist them. Tyrann Mathieu will be replaced by Bryan Cook and Justin Reid, who was signed as a free agent.
Having said that, the Chiefs’ schedule isn’t going to help them. Kansas City will host Buffalo and Tennessee in addition to going to Cincinnati and Tampa Bay. That slate will put the new-look receiver room and revamped defense to the test.
If you want to be the greatest, you have to defeat the best, as the saying goes.
