Are the San Francisco 49ers rookies starting to get the reality of life in the NFL? The first four picks in this years draft were all taken in the second round. The 49ers took Iowa linebacker James Morris in the 47th spot, Purdue safety Delano Howell in the 58th spot, Robert James in the 60th spot, and LSU cornerback Trey Lance in the 61st spot. There’s only 2 picks between those selections. The 49ers traded their second pick in the second round to the Green Bay Packers for an additional pick in the third round.
It’s been a tough week for San Francisco 49ers rookies, who were forced to try and cope with the realities of the NFL. The 49ers’ second round pick, running back Trey “Ghetto” Lance, was arrested on suspicion of committing a “brutal” and “senseless” attack on his girlfriend. Lance, who was drafted in the third round out of Texas A&M, was brought on at running back following the benching of veteran Frank Gore, who was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list after sustaining a concussion.
It takes a while for rookies to get acclimated to the NFL. On the latest trip to San Francisco, second round draft pick Trey Lance found that out the hard way.
Expectations are high for Trey Lance. The San Francisco 49ers’ starting quarterback was the third pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, coming from North Dakota State. The 49ers’ training camp hasn’t even started yet, and Lance and the rest of San Francisco’s rookies are already facing a hard dose of reality.

(Photo by Michael Zagaris/San Francisco 49ers/Getty Images) Lance is well positioned to become a top quarterback in the NFL. He is 6 feet tall, weighs 226 pounds and has a strong arm. He is athletically gifted and can use his legs to get out of trouble. Lance is a typical potential guy. What he doesn’t have is experience. Lance not only didn’t play at North Dakota State, he hardly played at all. He has appeared in one game since the 2019 season. He has only played once in 17 months, against Central Arkansas. He failed in this game, completing 15 of 30 passes for 149 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. As a rookie, he threw a pass attempt. He had success as a sophomore in 2019, leading the Bisons to a national title. Lance scored a total of 2,786 yards and threw 28 touchdowns. He also ran for 1,100 yards and scored 14 points on the ground. COVID-19 was limited to one game against Central Arkansas in 2020. He left after his junior year and reported for the 2021 NFL Draft, where he was quickly selected by the 49ers.
Trey Lance and 49ers rookies get an early dose of reality
. Like most rookies, Lance wasted no time getting to the command center. The day after his selection, he and his family attended a meeting with 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan. Shanahan warned Lance during the meeting, and it had nothing to do with football. The topic of conversation was looking for apartments in the Bay Area, and it wasn’t fun. We spent time together, they were looking for houses and things like that, Shanahan said, according to ESPN. I said to him: Don’t be too depressed. Everyone gets really frustrated after the first few days and you realize you need to change what you’re looking for. And they say: No, we were told everything. That’s what I’m saying: No, everyone told me you’d see it was real. San Francisco is an expensive place to live. Many rookies and young players sit in a room until they prove themselves on the field. George Kittle was selected in the fifth round of the draft and became one of the best tight ends in the game for the 49ers. He advises beginners to do what has made them successful and the rest will come naturally. Santa Clara is a great place to play football because football always comes first, Kittle said. I think it’s a great place to play football and commit to it every day. As for recruits, you’ve been trying to get to this level your whole life. Just because you have a few bucks in your pocket doesn’t mean you have to change what you did.
Embry Thomas, a newcomer, is baffled by house prices
Lance isn’t the only 49ers rookie who has noticed the high cost of living. Embry Thomas, a cornerback from Michigan who was selected in the third round, already had those thoughts in his head when he was drafted. As soon as I got the call, I was happy, excited, then I thought of all kinds of things: California, taxes, taxes, and I started thinking about all that and the cost of living, Thomas says. That’s what I’m saying: Hey, it’s expensive, very expensive. But I’m just grateful for the opportunity, honestly. Avoid the cost of living and have everything right away. I feel like my game will take care of my pockets. Monica Thomas, a real estate agent who works closely with the 49ers, said the average sales price for a single-family home (1,800 square feet) in Santa Clara County is $1.96 million, according to ESPN. By comparison : In Lance’s hometown of Marshall, Minnesota, the median price of a single-family home (2,100 square feet) is $198,685. Lance won’t have to worry as much as his rookie teammates. He signed a four-year, $34.1 million contract with a $22.1 million bonus. COMPARED TO: Davante Adams can thank the former 49ers QB for his amazingroute skills.
