Phil Mickelson has gotten a lot of attention recently for his play on the golf course and his frequent appearances on television as a commentator. But did you know he had a brush with fame while still in high school? “I was wondering what I was going to do in college, and my coach said he had a guy he wanted me to meet,” Mickelson recalls. “He was a good player, but I didn’t know if he was going to make it as a pro.” The “guy” was Ted Bundy, and he and Mickelson were members of the 1969 Southern Arizona High School golf team.

Phil Mickelson may not seem like the type to be in a high school social clique, but the professional golfer was actually on his high school’s golf team at San Diego’s Torrey Pines High School. (This is something like finding out that the star of “The Social Network” was involved in high school “nerd” activities.) His best friend at the time, though, may raise a few eyebrows. The athlete who Mickelson played high school golf with was Mark Hacking, who later became a Mormon missionary and ended up being convicted of murder in 2008.

Phil Mickelson, one of the top golf players in the world, recently claimed he was on the high school golf team with a convicted murderer. Phil Mickelson was born in San Diego, California. He was born in 1970. He was raised in California. He attended high school at Granite Hills High School in El Cajon, California. Mickelson credits his success in golf to time spent on his high school golf team.

At the beginning of an athlete’s career, it’s not always easy to know who has it in them to push to the limit. Talent and determination are usually the deciding factors, although luck and sometimes tragedy also play a role. No one knows that better than golfer Phil Mickelson. As a high school student, Mickelson played on the same team as Scott Peterson, a talented golfer whose career ultimately failed and who later became a convicted murderer. Let’s see how these two promising golfers crossed paths and then made completely different decisions.

San Diego High School, home of talented golfers

Mickelson is two years ahead of Peterson and is already a talented golfer. As a freshman in 1987, Peterson also showed promise despite playing on a high school team full of talented golfers. That year, the team reached the sectional team championship of the California Interscholastic Federation-San Diego. However, Mickelson decided to skip the championship and participate in a local qualifier for the U.S. Open. So Peterson has taken Mickelson’s place on the varsity team, according to the Napa Valley Register. After Mickelson’s departure, Peterson, then a junior, emerged as one of the college team’s biggest stars. According to Golf Digest, Peterson finished seventh in the CIF Individual Championship, just six strokes behind winner Chris Riley. While not all of Peterson’s teammates liked him personally, they respected his game, as did his coaches.

Phil Mickelson’s path to glory

. After high school, Mickelson attended Arizona State University on a golf scholarship. During his time there, he became one of the most recognizable figures in amateur golf, winning three individual NCAA championships, according to Collegiate Golf. He was also a four-time first-team Ping All-America member and a three-time Jack Nicklaus Collegiate Player of the Year. Mickelson turned pro almost immediately after graduating from Arizona State University in 1992. A year or two later, he won several PGA Tour events over the next decade. But it was only in 2004, in his 13th year. Mickelson finally won his first major championship in his final year on the PGA Tour.

He also studied at Arizona State University. But while Mickelson received a full golf scholarship, Peterson received only a partial scholarship. Still, Peterson is considered a talented golfer with a lot of potential. However, Peterson’s golf career ended after an incident during his junior year. He had to escort promising golfer Chris Couch – then ranked No. 1 in the country as a junior – to the ASU campus. Instead, Peterson got Kauch drunk, which drew the ire of Kauch’s father, who insisted that Peterson be dropped from the team, according to the South Florida Sun Sentinel. Peterson eventually changed careers, but his golf career was pretty much over. He led a fairly quiet life, got married and opened a sports bar in San Luis Obispo. Then, in 2003, Peterson was arrested for the murder of his pregnant wife, Laci. This all happened at almost the same time Mickelson was playing Tiger Woods in the 2003 Buick Invitational. (Woods eventually won the tournament.) Peterson was convicted of murder and sentenced to death. Mickelson, meanwhile, was on the verge of one of the best starts in golf history.Phil Mickelson’s name is synonymous with some of the best golfers of his generation. Eleven major championships, a career win percentage of 56%, and a PGA Tour record for second-place finishes. But before Mickelson competed in his first U.S. Open he was just another high school golfer trying to find his way on the links. A profile piece in The Wall Street Journal noted that Mickelson “was a very good golfer . . . but not a prodigy.” That’s putting it mildly. During his time at Merced High School he was also forced to share a golf team with a rather famous convicted murderer..
